Job summary

An exciting opportunity for hard-working and ambitious plastic surgeons to join a well-established registrar program in one of the largest Burns, Plastics and Hands units in the country. This job is tailored according to the experience of the candidate and would be very suitable for candidates seeking a national training number (NTN) in Plastic Surgery. We have a robust track record in registrars working in this post securing a NTN. 100% of the Pre-ST3 Fellows appointed in August 2022 were offered NTNs in National Selection 2023. We take pride that our non-deanery trainees have the same training opportunities as deanery trainees.


Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to:

-Lead morning handover, trauma meeting and ward round

-Provide supervision to the core-level doctors

-Lead night handover when on call

-Undertake trauma lists under appropriate supervision when on call, including at weekends

-Assist consultants in clinic and theatre lists

-Responsibility for the safe and effective care of inpatients and outpatients under the care of the burns, plastics and hand surgery teams

-Liaise with members of the MDT, including plastics outreach nurses, hand therapists, rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, burns outreach nurses etc.

-Engage in teaching and training of the junior doctors

-The JSDs work a Full Shift Rota (with prospective cover for annual leave, study leave and bank holidays)

Job responsibilities

The department consists of a 20 bedded Burns Ward, a dedicated Burns theatre suite, a 22 bedded Plastics ward, an outpatient department and the Hand and Peripheral Nerve Unit. The service is largely delivered across three trust sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Solihull Hospital and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham (ROH). In addition, a hub-and-spoke model serves smaller hospitals in the region. Emergency and Military surgery is performed at the QEHB where a dedicated Orthoplastic Extremity Trauma (OPET) service is present.

Training/educational opportunities of this role:

-The post holder will be allocated an Assigned Educational supervisor (AES) and Clinical Supervisors (CS) in the same manner as NTN holders. The post holder will be expected to engage in ISCP activity and will have regular AES meetings.

-The post holder will be attached to consultant firms similar to NTN registrars

-The post holder will be expected to engage with workplace-based assessments (WBAs) in the same manner as NTN registrars

-The post holder will be supported to attend in-house teaching sessions

-The post holder will be eligible for study leave and study budget according to the terms of the contract

-The post holder will have one-on-one opportunities for interview/exam practice with consultants in different sub-specialties

-The post holder will have exposure to burns surgery, skin oncology surgery and hands surgery. This will support their indicative log books for ST3 applications

-We have a list of available audit and research projects. The post holder is expected to engage in this process culminating in presentations and publications

-This post gives experience in acute plastic surgical trauma including hand surgery, a wide variety of elective plastic surgery and experience in the care of patients with burns. Experience can also be gained in the managing military casualties, lower limb trauma, elective breast reconstruction, head and neck surgery. There is also an opportunity to gain experience in Microsurgery
