Overview
IAPT Trainee Wellbeing Practitioner for Children and Young People (CWP) – Fixed-Term Contract for one year ending January 2027, with the aim that additional funding can be secured to extend employment beyond this date. 35 hours per week. Location: Torbay. Salary: £27,485 per annum (plus allowances).

This role sits within our children and families’ directorate, which provides immediate one-to-one and group support for children who urgently need help.
Role summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated trainee Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) to join our service. You will work alongside The Children’s Society Wellbeing Service while completing a Postgraduate Diploma or a Graduate Diploma in Psychological Therapies Practice (Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - Children, Young People and Families) at the University of Exeter. The trainee CWP will be trained to deliver brief, focused evidence-based psychological interventions in the form of low intensity support and guided self-help to young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties (e.g., anxiety, low mood, behavioural challenges). Intensive clinical supervision and practice development will be provided. The post is salaried and the training is fully funded for its duration. The training is delivered by the University of Exeter.
Responsibilities
* Deliver brief, focused low-intensity psychological interventions and guided self-help to children and young people with mild to moderate mental health concerns.
* Participate in safeguarding and clinical supervision as part of a structured training programme.
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support children and families and monitor outcomes.
* Attend university-based taught and self-study days and work in service areas for remaining days to apply developing skills.
Qualifications and requirements
* Experience of working with children and young people is essential.
* Must meet education entry requirements for the education provider’s minimum entry criteria (see below).
* Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with academic demands of the course.
* Education entry requirements (as reviewed by the education provider): one of the following
* Minimum of a degree (Level 6) from a UK university or equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g., psychology) to access the Postgraduate route. The Graduate Diploma is a Level 6 qualification; some evidence of Level 5 activity may be considered if needed. Various qualification levels information can be found at gov.uk.
* Applicants who have studied up to Level 4 but have significant relevant experience may be considered.
Training and supervision
The trainee will receive robust support and supervision to ensure learning and development, with intensive clinical supervision and practice development provided during the year. This is an NHSE, HEE and DoH initiative to expand the mental health workforce.
