Job overview

We are looking for a highly committed, compassionate and motivated Band 7 IDB Nurse Specialist to join our friendly IBD multidisciplinary team here at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital.

The right candidate will have experience of working with patients who has gastroenterology diseases in the acute hospital setting and ideally experience of working with patients with IBD.

This post requires an enthusiastic and motivated individual with advanced skills and non-medical prescribing, who can work autonomously and as a key member of the IBD multidisciplinary team.

This is an exciting and varied role that involves assessing and initiating treatment plans, virtual and face to face nurse led clinics, educational clinics, managing a busy telephone advice line, inpatient support as well as research, service improvement and line management.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide an autonomous inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) service, using advanced clinical judgement and knowledge of the specialty.
2. To take responsibility for own evidence-based practice and implement and add to the body of knowledge that supports nursing practice within IBD.
3. To manage patient caseloads autonomously and run clinics independently once competencies achieved.
4. To manage patient flare line, alongside other CNS team members.
5. To partake in inpatient reviews and patient education.
6. To effectively and safely manage continuous medication use, and undertake appropriate monitoring required to ensure patient safety.
7. To lead and innovate nursing practice within IBD, both within the Trust and through local networks.
8. To review and develop IBD guidelines, protocols, and policies for the Trust.
9. To work alongside & develop all staff within the multidisciplinary team, providing support, advice, formal and informal education.
10. Participate in departmental audit (local and national) and implementation and evaluation of audit outcomes / national standards.
11. You should have excellent communication skills, together with the ability to organise and motivate others, as well as demonstrating significant initiative.
12. The post holder (Nursing) must comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To help develop and provide a specialist nursing service for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The post holder will be expected to work independently and as an active participant in the multidisciplinary team. Duties will include outpatient and inpatient review of patients, assessing and triaging patients via the IBD helpline, patient education
(diagnosis and treatment), patient recording onto the IBD registry. Ensuring that immunosuppressant and biological therapy are monitored correctly. Experience in inflammatory bowel disease is essential.

Essential criteria

13. Active NMC registration
14. Non Medical Prescriber
15. IBD degree module
16. Further relevant training
17. Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable criteria

18. Teaching / mentorship qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

19. Significant experience in a band 6 CNS role
20. Gastroenterology nursing experience
21. Experience of participating in clinical audit
22. Experience of planning, delivering and evaluation the care of patients requiring biological therapy

Desirable criteria

23. Involvement in development of protocols
24. Contributor to published research

Knowledge

Essential criteria

25. Extensive knowledge of the care of IBD patients
26. Comprehensive understanding of relevant medications
27. Able to use IT systems including Microsoft Office
28. Understanding of the current NHS agenda and health policy including transformation and workforce
29. Knowledge of risk management and governance

Desirable criteria

30. Knowledge of service improvements and project management

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
