Specialist Practitioner in Transfusion

The post holder will promote the positive image of the clinical area and the Trust by being a role model, having a clear vision and using direct clinical leadership to ensure an excellent patient experience.
Ensure compliance with relevant national legislation and guidelines relating to Blood Transfusion.
To work as part of the Transfusion Team to promote the safe effective and efficient use of blood and blood products.
Through their role in the senior laboratory team and HTT ensure assessment of the requirements of the users of the blood transfusion service and help implement service driven changes accordingly.
Help ensure the provision of an effective and efficient service, and to contribute to staff training and development in the area of transfusion medicine.
The post holder will be required to maintain their professional registration and an up-to-date knowledge of their specialist area through continual professional development.
Main duties of the job
To practise as a Transfusion Specialist as part of both the Hospital Transfusion Team and the Hospital Transfusion Committee.
The post holder is a recognised expert in the specialty, responsible for assessing, developing and implementing specialist nursing care programmes and undertaking specialist nursing procedures.
Responsible for providing specialist advice and support to, and liaising with, other staff.
Responsible for developing and maintaining a trust wide training, competency and assessment program for safe transfusion practice for all staff groups.
To promote better labelling of samples and appropriate use of components and to establish >80% compliance with NBTC standards for training and competency assessment within the trust. To work towards ensuring, that transfusion practice within the Trust is in compliance with local policy, national guidelines and national/international law.
To promote Patient Blood Management initiatives, including identification of Transfusion alternatives, information and consent to blood transfusion in line with NICE recommendations.
Required to undertake research and lead clinical audits and respond proactively to implement effective changes based on their findings.

Person Specification
Knowledge & Skills
* Working knowledge of Pathology IT systems.
* Knowledge of ISO15189 standards
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and Health & Safety measures
Qualifications & Training
* Degree in nursing or a Health-related subject
* Registered practitioner (RN or HCPC)
* FIBMS, MSc or equivalent in Blood Transfusion
Experience
* Knowledge of Blood Transfusion techniques
* Method validation and verification expertise
* Evidence of change management
