We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our community of tech experts in DWP Digital. We build and maintain digital solutions used by millions across the UK, daily and at key moments in their lives. DWP is the UK’s largest government department, delivering services and payments worth billions to empower people.
Responsibilities
* Lead the delivery of high-impact software projects in agile, multidisciplinary teams.
* Design, build, and maintain applications that meet user needs and government standards.
* Hands-on problem solving, driving continuous improvement, and addressing technical challenges.
* Manage development workflows and coordinate tasks using tools like Jira, across legacy system transformation, new feature development, and critical incident support.
* Mentor engineers, engage with stakeholders, and contribute to architectural decisions to shape the future of digital public services.
Skills, knowledge and experience
* Strong proficiency in Java and COBOL with experience in developing and maintaining enterprise applications, including legacy system integration.
* Leadership and mentoring – ability to guide development teams and promote best practices.
* Agile delivery and problem-solving – experience working in multidisciplinary agile teams, handling time-critical incidents, and delivering user-focused solutions.
* Effective communication and collaboration – able to explain technical decisions to varied audiences and work with architects, stakeholders, and delivery managers.
Location and working pattern
Location: Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Sheffield (hybrid model).
Hybrid Working: 40% at home, 60% in a hub.
Salary and benefits
* Pay up to £78,517.
* Pension with employer contributions up to 28.97%, worth up to £19,758 per year.
* Holidays starting at 26 days, rising to 31 days over time, plus up to 3 extra days per month via flexi-time and public holidays.
