Dermatology Medical Secretary

We are looking for a highly motivated and well organised individual to join the Dermatology Secretarial Team at York Hospital.
This varied secretarial role will support Dermatology Consultants with communication, administrative and secretarial tasks.
The post holder will also provide key support to our patients, by assisting with their queries, concerns and engaging with the wider clinical team and other key stakeholders.
This is a varied and busy post, with duties and tasks also required to support other areas in the Dermatology Service.

Main duties of the job
Typing of clinics and general correspondence, complex diary management and provision of patient data. Dealing with correspondence from patients, GPs and other sources, including the scheduling of appointments, to ensure referral to treatment targets are met.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, and relevant secretarial/admin experience. Together with proficient typing skills, particularly in audiotyping, and have experience of digital dictation. Knowledge of medical terminology would be advantageous.
To be successful in the post you must be well organised, able to prioritise your own workload in a fast‑paced environment and work independently to meet strict deadlines.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
* ECDL
Experience
* Minimum 2 years secretarial/administrative experience
* Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
* Experience of working under pressure and to tight deadlines for minimum 1 year
* Experience of working autonomously whilst adhering to protocols and procedures for minimum 1 year
* Good attention to detail and completion of tasks to deadlines
* NHS Experience
Skills
* Ability to work under own initiative and judgement in dealing with non‑routine enquiries and situations (arising from contact with colleagues and/or patients and relatives).
* Good organisational and time management skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex information to staff, patients and others as required
* Must be able to prioritise and plan daily workload including working flexibly when interruptions impact upon completion of daily tasks
* Must be computer literate, including typing and advanced keyboard skills
Knowledge
* Evidence of ability to develop effective working relationships with different levels and disciplines internal and external to the organisation
* Knowledge of medical terminology
Personal characteristics
* Diplomacy and negotiation skills required to resolve complex and or emotionally charged situations
* Good telephone manner and the ability to deal sensitively with enquiries
