Higher Medical Laboratory Assistant

The closing date is 16 March 2026

We are seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a higher medical laboratory assistant. They will support the scientific staff to deliver stem cell and cellular therapy receipt, processing and distribution for the bone marrow transplant and CAR‑T programmes in Clinical Haematology at NUH.

There will be a variety of duties across the laboratory and team offices. Whilst we provide a planned service we adapt to our patient needs and so flexibility and adaptability are a must.


Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are:

* Receipt, preparation and storage of samples and cellular products
* Use, monitoring and maintaining laboratory equipment
* Cleaning and environmental monitoring
* Associated administrative tasks
* Delivery and collection of items, including samples and products from across the hospital site.

Person Specification


Training & Qualifications

* Basic science qualifications, e.g. GCSE demonstrating basic numeric and literacy skills
* Previous laboratory experience or similar environment
* NVQ level 3 in clinical laboratory support or equivalent


Experience

* Basic computer literacy
* Stock Management
* Previous practical experience of laboratory work
* Previous experience of NHS IT systems, careflow, NOTIS.


Communication and Relationship Skills

* Able to provide and receive information in various forms with internal and external personnel
* Understanding of the importance of confidential or sensitive information
* Good interpersonal skills
* Remains calm under pressure
* Able to work well in a team and as an individual
* Experience dealing with telephone enquiries


Analytical and Judgement Skills

* Able to use judgement in uncomplicated situations for managing workload e.g. allocation of stock per delivery schedules
* Able to prioritise urgent work under the direction of scientific staffUnderstands own limitations of practice
* Accuracy and attention to detail
* Understanding of the importance of confidential or sensitive information


Planning and Organisation Skills

* Able to plan and prioritise own work to meet agreed targets on an ongoing basis
* Able to perform work with minimum supervision
* Able to multitask
* Able to problem solve
* Demonstrates prompt timekeeping and good attendance in the workplace


Physical Skills

* Able to concentrate and perform repetitive tasks
* Able to move large dewars within the laboratory
* Able to transport smaller items across campus
* Able to work at a VDU for extended periods of time


Other requirements specific to the role

* Flexible approach to working hours and very occasional support out of hours
