Band 2 Theatre Support Worker

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Theatre Support Worker, Solihull Hospital Theatres, and Good Hope Hospital Theatres – Band 2.

Closing date: 23 April 2026.

Some exciting opportunities have arisen for aspiring Theatre Support Workers to support the clinical team at Solihull Main Theatres, Solihull Elective Hub Theatres and Good Hope Theatres.

The theatres offer specialities such as urology, robotics, colorectal, breast/plastics, orthopaedic and UGI surgery on the Solihull site, and orthopaedics, gynae, general, obstetrics, ophthalmology and emergency on the Good Hope site.

We are seeking applications from hardworking, honest and reliable individuals who are interested in a unique position that directly contributes to high-quality patient‑centred care.

The post holder will undertake the movement of patients, equipment and designated items throughout the hospital and will contribute to the maintenance of a clean and safe working environment.

Main duties of the job

Communication and Relationship Skills

Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, visitors and Trust colleagues, overcoming any differences in communication.

Obtain consent from patients prior to conducting any intervention and, where this is withheld, seek advice or support from a registered practitioner.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues, recognising there may be a need to utilise alternative methods of communication where there are barriers to understanding. Ensure conversations and interactions are factual, reassuring and tactful, referring to a registered practitioner as required.

Welcoming and Support

Welcome patients and visitors to the department, provide assistance, support and information where required. Answer the telephone and deal with visitors to the department promptly in a polite and professional manner and deal with enquiries as appropriate. Make work‑related phone calls or IT requests as necessary.

Information Management

Receive and convey information on behalf of others, ensuring all information received and conveyed is clear, precise, accurate and timely – this will involve answering bleeps and telephones on behalf of other staff.

Maintain a high standard of personal behaviour and ensure effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, carers and relatives.

Communicate effectively with other team members ensuring that the views and wishes of the patient are communicated and taken into consideration.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Evidence of Maths/English qualifications at Level 2 or above.
* Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.
* Level 2 examples: GCSE Grades 9-4 (A-C); Level 2 Diploma in health care support / NVQ, Functional Skills Level 2.
* Internationally educated applicants must evidence UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre) Statements of compatibility.
* Care Certificate or prior skills, knowledge and experience that meet the 15 minimum standards described by Health Education England (HEE) Skills for Health.


Experience

* Experience of working/participating as part of a team as an employee or volunteer.
* Ability to demonstrate/ articulate an understanding of the role and tasks involved and can describe the physical and emotional aspects of the role and some duties.
* Can link the Trust values (Kind, Bold, Connected) to the role and provide examples from personal experience which demonstrate understanding in relation to the role.
* Can explain why training/education and approaches to care need to be consistent in relation to safety and patient experience.
* Shows enthusiasm for the role and is interested in working in a theatre / interventional radiology practice setting.
* Has experience of working in a person‑centred/facing role in a paid or voluntary capacity.
* Understanding of the principles of safeguarding in relation to this role.


Additional Criteria

* Good standard of spoken and written English.
* Effective communication skills – written and oral.
* Basic computer skills.
* Ability to work with competing priorities / can demonstrate an understanding of workload and how to prioritise.
* Good organisational skills.
* Ability to demonstrate numeracy skills associated with the role i.e. record volume of fluids/drinks.
* Ability to demonstrate literacy skills associated with the role i.e. understanding of written information / instructions / duties including policy and procedures.
* Undertake coursework practical, theoretical, and written associated with skills / competencies aligned to the role.
* Flexible approach to shift patterns and place of work; this may include working in different practice settings in different locations dependent upon service need.
