Job Overview
We are looking for a dynamic, ambitious and motivated Senior Healthcare Support Worker to join the Vascular Access Service!
In this role you will be involved in the day-to-day delivery of the service whilst working closely with the Vascular Access Practitioners. The role is varied, being both clinical and administrative.
This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join an expanding service whilst continuing to learn and develop new skills and knowledge.

Please note, this role does not currently meet the salary requirement for visa sponsorship. From the 9th April 2025, the minimum salary required for a Skilled Worker visa became £25,000 per year. While this role may be offered at a higher point on the pay scale depending on relevant NHS experience, most new starters are appointed at the bottom of the band, which does not meet the salary threshold.

Main duties of the job
As a Senior Healthcare Support Worker in the Vascular Access Service, you will:
* Assist the vascular access practitioner in the placement of various lines across the trust
* Undertake pre and post procedural tasks
* Stock management
* Administrative tasks
* Line care - dressing the line and flushing (once training)
* Liaise with patients
* Liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team
* Assist with data collection and audits

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Clinical - Communication and Relationship Skills
* Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in providing compassionate care for patients, visitors/relatives and colleagues.
* Contribute towards sharing good practice within the department and Trust wide.
* Always promote a positive image of North Bristol NHS Trust.
* Work cohesively with all members of the Vascular Access Team
* Communicate effectively within the team, participate in motivating and supporting team members and maintain confidentiality with patients and carers. Give written and verbal advice/teaching to patients and carers.
* Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, helping to alleviate any anxiety during the procedur
Clinical – Patient Care
* Practice safe standards or care following North Bristol NHS Trust guidelines and policies and within the scope of the role.
* Deliver effective care to patients undergoing a vascular access device insertion and post- insertion care under the direction of the Vascular Access Nurse/Practitioner.
* Participate in patient assessment (under the direction of and after appropriate delegation from the Registered Nurse/Practitioner), to deliver high standards of care.
* Provide written information to inpatients who are waiting for a PICC insertion.
* Follow individual patients post line insertion and report any changes immediately to the Vascular Access Nurse/Practitioner.
* Once trained undertake Vascular access device care – dressing and flushing.
* Actively promote self-care and independence to enable timely discharge.
* Maintain clear, concise patient records and documentation adhering to national standards and Trust policies and procedures.
* Obtain informed consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies.
* Undertake safe transfer/escort of patients between settings after appropriate training and delegation from the Registered Nurse/Practitioner.
* Provide clinical care in accordance with the infection prevention and health and safety policies and procedures.
* Promote health education specific to the clinical area and in line with national and Trust policies.
* Initiate and participate with cardio-pulmonary resuscitation procedures when required.
* Ensure clinical area is prepared and maintained as appropriate to individual patient needs.
* Maintain the work environment in line with Trust infection control and patient safety policies.
* Identify the requirements for and availability of equipment, stores and CSSD as appropriate for patient’s clinical care.
* Ensure equipment is well maintained and take appropriate action if the equipment is faulty.
* Identify potential risk issues regarding equipment/stores and report to the Nurse/Practitioner.
* Maintain and order stock.
* Take responsibility for ensuring that the procedure room and trollies are always fully stocked.
* Ensure that Health & Safety requirements are met. Report and record all accidents and incidents according to the Trust Policy, acting as necessary.
* Promptly report complaints made and co-operate with official investigations when required.
* Take responsibility for patients’ property and valuables according to Trust Policy.
* Maintain the Vascular Access database and record information as appropriate
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Level 3 NVQ/ RQF/ QCF in Health or Social Care or equivalent experience
* GCSE grade A- C (grade 4 and above) or equivalent in English
* GCSE grade A- C (grade 4 and above) or equivalent in Maths
Work Experience
Essential criteria
* At least 12 months recent, formal experience of working in a health or social care setting
* Current experience in an acute hospital setting
* Be able to work as a member of a team
* Experience of time management skills and prioritising work
* Ability to work independently and use own initiative
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
* Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
* Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately
* IT skills, basic word, email, keyboard skills
* Able to adapt quickly to changing situations
* Knowledge and understanding of aseptic technique
Desirable criteria
* Experience caring for patients with vascular access devices
* Knowledge of ordering and maintaining stock levels
* Experience of assisting with clinical audits, gathering data for reports
