Band 6 Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Department of Head and Neck at the University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) has an exciting opportunity for an extremely motivated Band 6 Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
You will possess a minimum of 12 months experience in the care of the patient with a head and neck cancer diagnosis and be able to demonstrate passion for the speciality in order to drive delivery of the highest quality care. You will demonstrate competence and confidence in care of general head and neck patients as well as sound knowledge and skills of the management of the patient with an altered airway.
The fantastic UHB Head and Neck CNS team consists of a generic head and neck team, a head and neck and altered airway team, an altered airway team, a skull base team and thyroid team as well as a dedicated head and neck counsellor and a head and neck complementary therapist.
You will work as part of an extensive multi-disciplinary team so nurturing of excellent working relationships is key.
Initiative is key as you will be the keyworker for the patient from their cancer diagnosis through their surveillance treatment and follow up.
You will be flexible to meet the needs of the service and there will be an expectation that you work cross site as necessary. The role is currently under review and may, in the future encompass elements of thyroid cancer specialist nursing.
Main duties of the job
As the clinical expert keyworker and point of contact you will support both the patient and their careers and ensure progression of the patient along all stages of the complex head and neck and cancer disease pathway-either while undergoing surgical and or oncological treatment.
The role of head and neck clinical nurse specialist involves nurse led clinics, supporting patient and carers at diagnosis, facilitating the requesting and reporting of investigations-and ensuring multi-disciplinary discussion for treatment plan, psychological support, supporting through both surgical and or non-surgical treatment and as appropriate other agency referral.
Altered Airway management, troubleshooting competence is a fundamental of this role of head and neck clinical nurse specialist as well as ability to teach, advise and support the patient, carers and other colleagues caring for patients with tracheostomy or laryngectomy.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* *Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
* *Evidence of post registration CPD / post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to FHEQ Level 6
* *Non medical Image requesting
Experience
* *At least 12 months experience in care of the patient with a head and neck cancer.
* *Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
* *Significant post registration experience, with evidence of passion/ enthusiasm and knowledge for the associated area of specialist practice
* *Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence
* *Demonstrate specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality
* *Experience and enthusiasm for teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting
* *Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment
* *Demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice-based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the NMC

* *Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload and developing skills, knowledge and competence
* *Willingness to achieve competence in a range of clinical skills and expanded practices
