<div><h3>Stroke Specialist Speech and Language Therapist</h3><h3>Band 6</h3><p>Main area Stroke Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Grade Band 6 Contract 12 months (Fixed Term Maternity Cover or secondment considered - finishes 31st July 2027). Hours Full time – 37.5 hours per week (Flexibility to cover 7 day working required). Job ref 201-26-546.</p><p>Site Bodmin Health Centre/ Woodfield (Bodmin Hospital), Town Bodmin. Salary £39,959 - £48,117 Per Annum / Pro Rata Salary period Yearly. Closing 29/06/2026 23:59. Interview date 09/07/2026.</p><h3>Job overview</h3><p>This fixed term split post provides specialist Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) across both the Woodfield Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (SRU) and the Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS). The post holder will work part time within the 14-bedded Woodfield SRU, delivering inpatient rehabilitation, and part time within ICSS, ensuring stroke patients across the community have access to timely specialist assessment, intervention, and ongoing care.</p><p>The role supports the delivery of a high-quality, patient‑centred stroke pathway, facilitating safe discharge from hospital and promoting recovery and independence post stroke.</p><p>As part of ICSS, the post holder will provide specialist assessment and intervention within patients’ homes or places of residence across a defined geographical area. There may be a requirement to provide countywide cover where needed.</p><p>Working as an autonomous practitioner, the post holder will manage a complex caseload of adult patients, including those with chronic presentations, using evidence‑based practice to assess and treat communication and/or swallowing difficulties.</p><p>The role includes early identification and management of stroke‑related complications, supporting reduction in hospital readmissions and improving long‑term outcomes.</p><p>This role involves frequent travel across the county, including to areas not easily accessible by public transport.</p><h3>Main duties of the job</h3><ul><li>Providing specialist assessment, treatment, and personalised goal setting in both inpatient and community settings</li><li>Supporting safe and timely discharge from hospital and continuity of care in the community</li><li>Early identification and management of stroke-related complications to reduce readmissions</li><li>Promoting rehabilitation, recovery, and development of self‑management skills</li><li>Delivering education, advice, and support to patients, families, carers, and the wider MDT</li><li>Liaising closely with multidisciplinary teams, external agencies, and community services</li><li>Providing signposting to appropriate services and support networks</li><li>Supporting delivery of training and ongoing development for MDT colleagues and partner organisations</li></ul><h3>Person specification</h3><h3>Knowledge and abilities</h3><ul><li>Evidence of clinical audit/research activity</li><li>Knowledge of national agendas influencing clinical practice e.g. NICE</li><li>Well‑developed communication skills – empathy, negotiation, motivation, presenting complex facts in an understandable way, reassurance and support particularly to anxious people</li></ul><h3>Education and registration</h3><ul><li>Degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent qualification)</li><li>Registration with Health Professions Council</li><li>Evidence of professional development, specialist training and advanced professional qualifications in neurodevelopmental conditions</li><li>Evidence of completed Newly Qualified Practitioner Competency Framework</li><li>Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists</li><li>Membership of appropriate clinical interest groups</li></ul><h3>Experience</h3><ul><li>Experience of working with Augmentative and Alternative Communication</li><li>Comprehensive experience of working with adult patients in a variety of settings</li><li>Experience working in an NHS setting in the following clinical areas: Stroke, Eldercare, Neurology</li><li>Substantial post‑qualification experience including management of stroke and independent dysphagia management</li><li>Experience of evaluating service delivery and monitoring effectiveness and outcomes of intervention, and undertaking clinical audit and research projects</li></ul><h3>Skills and aptitude</h3><ul><li>Autonomous practitioner able to deal with complex clinical issues</li><li>Excellent written, verbal, computer and interpersonal communication skills; dexterity, coordination and keyboard skills</li></ul><h3>Benefits</h3><ul><li>Suite of health and wellbeing initiatives to support physical and mental health</li><li>Free access to individual HARP portfolios to support revalidation for nursing staff</li><li>Free DBS checks where required</li><li>Discounts available from retailers, UK hotels and main attractions</li><li>Salary sacrifice car scheme</li><li>Cycle to work scheme</li><li>Trust reimburses all application costs for staff eligible to apply for EU settlement status</li></ul><h3>Eligibility</h3><p>This job is only open to people who already work for the NHS in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.
