Job Overview Location: Frimley Park Hospital Specialties Covered: Vascular, Upper GI, Urology, Colorectal and General Surgery An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Sister to lead Ward F7 at Frimley Park Hospital. Ward F7 is a busy and diverse elective surgical ward delivering high-quality care across a wide range of specialties. We are seeking a motivated, resilient, and forward-thinking nurse leader who is passionate about delivering excellent patient care and developing high-performing teams. As Senior Sister, you will provide strong clinical and operational leadership, taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of the ward and ensuring consistently high standards of care, safety, and patient experience. You will be a visible and approachable leader, supporting and inspiring your team, role-modelling best practice, and embedding the Trust’s values in everything you do. Key Responsibilities Include Providing clear, compassionate, and effective leadership to nursing staff within a fast-paced surgical environment Championing high-quality, safe, and patient-centred care, ensuring excellent outcomes and experiences Overseeing operational management of the ward, including staffing, patient flow, and effective use of resources Supporting staff development through coaching, mentorship, and performance management Upholding and modelling Trust values, constructively challenging poor practice and celebrating team achievements Participating in the Senior Duty Nurse rota, contributing to Trust-wide leadership and patient safety This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse who demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills, thrives under pressure, and is committed to continuous improvement and service excellence within surgical nursing. Main duties of the job This role requires close working relationships with a wide range of the multi-disciplinary/speciality teams, the Consultants, Heads of Nursing, Matrons, Ward Managers and the Clinical Site Management team. To succeed in this role, you will need to possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will need to have the ability to deal with challenging situations in a fast-paced environment in a professional and calm manner. You must have a proven ability in supervising, managing and controlling the activities of a unit in an effective and efficient manner. You will be a clinical role model and have a willingness to develop the team as well as your own professional growth. You will have excellent communication skills and high clinical standards with a passion to make a difference for patients and staff alike. You must have recent experience of working in a senior nurse role within Vascular, UGI, Colorectal, Urology and General Surgery and must be able to demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills in caring for patients, including acutely unwell and deteriorating patients. You will be knowledgeable regarding the speciality, plus fully understand governance and its importance in promoting and maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff and proactively monitor and feedback compliance. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Registered Nurse with NMC registration Mentorship programme /equivalent course Post registration continual professional development qualification. Education to Diploma/Degree level. Desirable criteria Successful completion of a leadership and development programme Skills & Knowledge Essential criteria Leadership skills, ability to motivate, build and lead team. Appropriate advanced nursing skills to care for Orthopaedic patients. Demonstrates understanding of principles of Clinical Governance (Risk Management & audit) Awareness of current professional nursing issues. Evidence of effective change management skills. Desirable criteria Advanced IT skills, experience with electronic patient records. Experience Essential criteria Relevant level of experience as a Band 6 in a surgical ward. Proven leadership and organisational skills, utilising own initiative in prioritising and decision making as part of the multi-disciplinary team. Demonstrable experience at senior level within surgical ward environment. Desirable criteria Experience of change management/ completion of yellow belt. Experience of recruitment and selection process. Evidence of clinical competence in area of Vascular, Colorectal, UGI, Urology and General Surgery. Effective teaching and presentation skills. Experience in budgetary management. Experience in managing a clinical area.
