We are recruiting for a fixed-term role, up to 2 years, with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including combustion plant, waste incineration, and refineries. Overview

The Energy & COMAH team within the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation (E&B Directorate) defines standards for the energy sectors and supports regulation, development, and delivery of environmental outcomes. You will regulate energy sectors to protect people and the environment from emissions and help mitigate the impacts of climate change as part of the UK strategy to deliver Net Zero.


Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training.
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects when needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents as a central part of the role; be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.


Team and Work Environment

The Energy & COMAH team leads on the definition of standards for the energy sectors, providing strategic direction, guidance, and training to deliver new duties and environmental best practice. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance delivery, influence policy and legislation, and secure resources.


Experience/Skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and actively encourage diversity considerations in work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge of the work area, including knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant.
* Ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.


Qualifications and Competence

* Competence 1 – Legislative Knowledge: Applies statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect the Environment Agency and the environment. You may be asked to discuss regulatory requirements for combustion plants of different sizes and purposes.
* Competence 2 – Works in Teams: Demonstrates cooperative teamwork to deliver a portfolio of work and manage priorities and responsibilities.
* Competence 3 – Builds and Sustains Relationships: Develops and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government officials and trade associations.
