Overview
We are recruiting for a Payroll Officer who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients. Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive payroll service to employees of NHS organisations whose payroll is run by the Trust. Work with other Payroll Officers and Team Leaders to ensure that staff are paid accurately and on time and to ensure a consistent approach to working practice. Prepare and complete pay and deduction data entries ensuring correct authorisation by managers prior to processing in line with relevant legislation and Trust policies. Validate and check data input made by the Human Resource department / Workforce and advise accordingly. This includes starters / leavers / change of circumstances. Once validated, set up new starter bank account, tax code, National Insurance rate, and pension details/rate. Maintain accurate records of sick/maternity leave/ parental leave / adoption leave, calculating reduced pay and sending written notice to Managers/HR and employees when these apply. Undertaking a range of manual calculations (PAYE, NI, SMP, SSP, etc.).
Responsibilities
* Provide a comprehensive payroll service to NHS employees within the Trust and ensure staff are paid accurately and on time.
* Work with other Payroll Officers and Team Leaders to maintain consistency in working practices.
* Prepare and validate pay and deduction data entries with manager authorisation, in line with legislation and Trust policies.
* Validate data input from the HR/Workforce function and advise where needed. Manage starters, leavers, and changes of circumstances.
* Set up starter details such as bank accounts, tax codes, National Insurance rates, and pension details once data is validated.
* Maintain records for sick/maternity/parental/adoption leave, calculate reduced pay, and notify managers, HR, and employees as applicable.
* Perform manual calculations (PAYE, NI, SMP, SSP, etc.) as required.
* Demonstrate attention to detail and proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook. Work under pressure and meet strict deadlines as part of a payroll team.
Qualifications & Experience
* Attention to detail and ability to use Word, Excel, and Outlook confidently.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; operate effectively as part of a team to ensure payroll meets statutory and NHS terms and conditions.
* Experience with Oracle or ESR is highly desirable.
* We would consider this as a trainee role on a Band 3 with promotion to Band 4 once certain competencies are met.
* As a trainee for a minimum of 12 months, you would be keen to learn and work toward achieving competency in the main responsibilities listed above. Most training will be on the job while working with the team.
* The position is ideal for school leavers, recent graduates, or career switchers seeking experience in this field.
