Researcher, Trade & Investment, Clean Economy, London

E3G is looking for a researcher to support the delivery of our work on the intersection of international trade & investment policy with climate change. This role would be based in E3G’s London office.

Background

E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We are world-leading strategists on the political economy of climate change, dedicated to achieving a safe climate for all.

We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action.

E3G is consistently ranked as one of the world's most influential environmental think tanks by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.

E3G offers a dynamic and fast paced working environment that will value your insight,

initiative and collaboration wherever you are in the organisation.

Overview

Based in the Clean Economy petal, this researcher role will contribute to developing and delivering E3G’s work on trade, investment and climate change. The researcher will provide expertise on the intersection of these policy areas in the UK, EU and international context, through a combination of political analysis and external engagement.

The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct analytical work on trade policy and investment governance. The specific areas of focus will depend on the evolving priorities of E3G’s Trade & Investment team, as we continue to identify new opportunities to deliver climate action through international cooperation on trade and investment. Examples of our recent work include developing proposals to strengthen bilateral trade partnerships or developing geopolitical scenarios to analyse positions on unilateral trade measures.

This role will also support E3G’s efforts to create international investment governance that can achieve climate goals. E3G has been pushing for the global reform of the current investment regime, based on investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), by providing strategic guidance and analysis and mobilising like-minded actors. In addition, this role will help scope out E3G’s work on a broader investment governance to facilitate and promote climate-aligned investments.

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis and produce written outputs such as blogs and briefings, including data visualisation, to communicate E3G proposals to public and private audiences.
* Monitor relevant developments in international trade and investment policy, including recently negotiated free trade agreements and investment treaties and relevant climate/energy policies of key countries.
* Analyse literature on the intersection of international investment governance and climate and support the development of strategies and narratives by providing data and ideas.
* Manage and grow relationships with external partners, including academic and research organisations both in the UK and internationally.
* Work collaboratively and flexibly across E3G’s Clean Economy team to support the objectives of colleagues in London, Brussels and Berlin.
* Provide administrative support where needed, including preparing and organising meetings and events and writing minutes.
* Some travel might be required but we are open to discussing this if this would otherwise become a barrier to your application.

This is not an exhaustive list, and the post-holder will be asked to undertake other tasks as required within the team and the wider organisation.

Person Description

You are intellectually curious and enthusiastic about working with others to develop solutions in the transition towards climate-neutral and resilient economies. You are committed to high-quality outputs even when working under pressure and use collaboration to achieve better outcomes. You are a creative thinker and able to learn fast. You are passionate about climate issues and keen to make an impact.

You have a strong analytical mindset and are confident in working with raw data to develop actionable insights. You are capable of thinking critically and assessing information from different sources, and can communicate your findings clearly.

Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will:

* Have a high-quality degree or professional qualification in a relevant area.
* Have a keen interest in trade, investment, climate and energy policies. Prior understanding of international affairs and/or international trade and investment law is desirable.
* Have strong research skills and previous research experience in a professional or academic setting. Data analysis skills and openness to learn new data tools and skills such as data visualisation are desirable.
* Have excellent written skills to communicate analysis clearly and distil innovative insights from complex information.
* Be a supportive, collaborative, and open colleague and team player.
* Be well organised and focused on delivering desired outputs, results, and outcomes to meet deadlines.

What we offer

* Permanent contract.
* Work-life balance. Enjoy a 35-hour work week with a hybrid work model.
* 25 vacation days + additional leave between Christmas and New Year.
* Additional employer pension contribution plan.
* Yearly process for remuneration review.
* An annual salary between £30,870 - £33,500, depending on the candidate’s professional experience and skills.
* You will be integrated in a dynamic organisation working to deliver climate safety for all, surrounded by friendly experts working on energy, buildings, industry decarbonation, finance, foreign policy, and more.

E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance to candidates who would need to change locations in order to take up this position. E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in London.

How to apply

Please submit your application in English, including the following:

* A CV of maximum two pages
* A cover letter of no more than one page outlining your motivation and the skills and experience you are bringing to the role as well as your earliest possible start date.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 22 June 2025 at 23:59. A first round of interviews will be conducted in the week commencing 21 July 2025.

Whilst we very much appreciate the time you will have taken with your application, unfortunately due to the level of response we receive we will not be able to reply to every candidate. Therefore, if you have not heard from us with 2 weeks of the closing date, please assume that on this occasion you have been unsuccessful.

E3G values diversity and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates regardless of age, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation,

religion or ethnic background. We aim to build an inclusive workforce that is reflective of the populations we support and actively seek applications from those who are marginalised and underrepresented. We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities.
