Overview
Full-time, 12 month appointment as a Locum Consultant with responsibility to Adult Critical Care at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post emphasises clinical work in Adult Critical Care with opportunities for teaching, administration and development. The contract is for 10.0 PAs, split as 7.5 DCC PAs in Critical Care and 1.5 core SPAs, with 1 additional PA available for further clinical work or non-clinical opportunities to support service needs by agreement with the Head of Service. The new consultant will join the Team NUH workforce of 36 Critical Care consultants and will work within a supportive team ethos.
The successful candidate will undertake formalised critical care rotations and work flexibly across the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital (NCH) campuses. An out-of-hours adult critical care duty roster is expected, with night on-call frequency currently 1:9 and weekend on-call frequency 1:4.5, subject to future changes as capacity expands.
Responsibilities
* Clinical: responsibility for the management of patients admitted under their care, covering the full range of surgical and medical emergency patients.
* Provide elective and emergency services in collaboration with Consultant colleagues; offer reciprocal cover during periods of leave.
* Maintain ongoing care for patients in their charge and ensure proper department functioning; cover short-term absences or sick leave.
* Agree to alterations in duties as service requirements change, with mutual agreement between the appointee, colleagues, and the Trust.
* Commit to devoting substantially the whole time to post duties and prioritising them accordingly.
Governance and Audit
* Active participation in clinical governance activities including clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, coroners referrals and reports, CPD and evidence-based practice.
Teaching
* Play a significant role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across the Trust's campuses; support placement and training for undergraduates and junior doctors; contribute to medical education framework and continuing professional development.
Research
* Work with the Trust’s links to Nottingham University and its research facilities; obtain approvals for research from the Trust R&I Department and ethical approvals as required; adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.
Other Duties as Agreed
* Potential to undertake additional roles (e.g., Training Programme Director, Regional College Advisor, Royal College Representative) with advance agreement by the Head of Service; job plan amendments may be required.
Environment and Diversity
NUH provides national and international specialist services, hosts the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, the Nottingham Children's Hospital, and, in partnership with the University of Nottingham, a Biomedical Research Centre. The Critical Care areas on the QMC and City campuses have 29 bed Level 3 and 20 bed Level 2 units, with major subspecialty interests listed. The City campus Critical Care unit has 17 beds.
