StoneX has acquired a precious metals processing company in West Bromwich which specialises in the recovery and recycling of precious metals, with expertise in extracting silver, gold, platinum and palladium from various materials including photographic, electronics and industrial waste. The integration of the two companies will add refining capabilities to the StoneX Global Metals business and create opportunities for us to offer multiple products across the market.
Overview
The purpose of the role is to support the Laboratory Manager with the day-to-day running of the laboratory, including the sampling and analysis of materials for precious metal content. The Analytical Chemist will also provide cover for the Laboratory Manager when needed and ensure compliance with HSE and environmental standards.
* Work closely with the Laboratory Manager to ensure smooth laboratory operation
* Support continuous improvement initiatives in the lab
* Help develop new methods and strategies to improve analytical accuracy and efficiency
* Collaborate with the Refinery Manager and SHE Manage to optimise safety and environmental compliance
* Assist in maintaining and updating safety procedures and documentation
Responsibilities
* Preparation of unknown samples to test the total precious metal (TPM) content within that sample including all types of material including metallic, powders and solutions using Fire Assay and chemical dissolution techniques followed by ICP-OES. Report results on the internal computer system.
* Test the purity of Silver in crystal and refined Silver bars ensuring they all meet the minimum criteria of 99.9% for acceptance using ICP-OES.
* Perform air quality tests for silver and Lead around the site of JBR to ensure we are compliant with HSE regulation reporting all results to SHE manager to act on accordingly.
* Perform surface quality test for silver and lead around JBR to ensure company is compliant with HSE regulations and ensure safety of employee reporting all results to SHE manager to act accordingly.
* Test samples from the Refinery to help monitor cell performance (e.g., silver concentration, acidity) and report results.
* Calibration and checking of equipment used in Laboratory area to ensure it is working at optimum efficiency and within parameters. Reporting any issues to the Laboratory Manager.
* Updating and constant checking of SSOW and Risk assessment to ensure all procedures in the laboratory are safe.
* Ensure laboratory is clean and tidy ensuring hazards are resolved as efficiently as possible.
* Ordering and maintaining stock and resources.
* Environmental and 14001 awareness and responsibilities are followed as specified at induction:
* Management of spills
* Reporting of environmental breaks of permit
* Fugitive emissions.
* Health & Safety within the workplace, ensuring all Health and Safety procedures are adhered to, and correct PPR/RPE is worn at all times.
* To be a site First Aider
Qualifications
* Chemistry degree is required and/or relevant experience
* Experience in analytical chemistry techniques, particularly Fire Assay and ICP-OES
* Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations, with willingness to promote best practices
* Experience working in a laboratory or chemical analysis environment
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Excellent problem-solving skills and initiative
* Flexible, reliable, and proactive approach to work
* Willingness to train and develop across various laboratory disciplines
* First Aid certification (desirable)
