Mechanical Design Engineer – Azenta Life Sciences
We are now looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to work with a small team contributing to project specific design / product configuration work following a welcome influx of customer contracts. This includes assembly & detail component design, generation of BOM’s and design substantiation (eg calculations etc) and working with cross-functional teams to meet customer requirements & timescales.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake design of assemblies, sub‑assemblies and components using Solidworks 3D CAD systems.
* Ensure designs are robust by using techniques such as FMEA, design review, DFM & DFS.
* Drive repeatability and standardisation into custom stores projects by utilising equipment and sub‑systems that are already developed and proven.
* Translate requirements for sub‑systems into design solutions based on specifications from customer / lead engineer or line manager.
* Work with the design team to identify, analyse and resolve project difficulties before they arise.
* Cooperate closely with other functions in the Hardware design team including Electrical Design, Refrigeration, Systems Engineering.
* Apply a ‘standard operations’ approach to the design process (eg calculation templates) and work with team lead to reinforce and further develop company practices.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of technical advances in the discipline and related fields.
Skills and Aptitude Profile
* Knowledgeable in the use of 3D CAD Modelling (Solidworks preferred), PLM system (Agile preferred) and use of this technology to improve design quality & efficiency.
* Direct experience of documenting design and providing calculations.
* Experience of design for CE technical construction files would be desirable.
* Working knowledge of lean, continuous improvement tools and techniques.
* Proficient in IT; Outlook, Project, Excel, Word.
Person Specification
* Graduate or HNC (engineering, manufacturing, or similar) with 5 to 10 years mechanical system design experience.
* Familiar with automation design eg motors, gearboxes, bearings, positional accuracy.
* Can detail design components, add dimensions and tolerances, tolerance stack calculations.
* Can design assemblies including generation of assembly drawings and BOMs.
* Can work effectively as part of a team.
* Can communicate clearly with colleagues regarding design intent, assessment of various design options & problem resolution.
* Can work with Operations and Test team during build and testing phases.
* Understands manufacturing methods and designs accordingly.
* Has worked with PLM systems and understands routing & approval of design documents (drawings, CAD models, calculations etc).
* Direct experience of generating design calculations.
* Foreign languages a bonus but not required.
