Location: Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire Job Title: Behaviour Mentor School Setting: Primary School (Reception–Year 6) Pay Rate: £90–£120 per day (dependent on experience) Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only Start Date: Immediate or by agreement Role Overview We are seeking a committed, patient, and empathetic Behaviour Mentor to join a thriving primary school in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting children’s social, emotional, and behavioural development, and who want to make a meaningful difference in the early years of education. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work closely with pupils who may struggle to manage their behaviour, emotions, or engagement in learning. Many children you support may experience SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) challenges, ADHD, anxiety, or attachment-related difficulties. Others may find the classroom environment overwhelming and require additional pastoral support to build confidence, resilience, and coping strategies. Your role is to provide consistent, nurturing support, enabling children to feel safe, valued, and capable of positive change. Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role The Behaviour Mentor’s purpose is to support children in developing the social and emotional skills necessary for success in school and life. This includes: Proactive support: Delivering structured mentoring and small group interventions that build emotional resilience, self-awareness, and social skills. Reactive support: Assisting pupils during moments of behavioural difficulty, de-escalating conflict, and helping them return to learning calmly. The school follows trauma-informed and restorative approaches, viewing challenging behaviour as a form of communication. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will help children understand their emotions, develop self-regulation strategies, and engage positively with their peers and teachers. Key Responsibilities In Hemel Hempstead, your responsibilities as a Behaviour Mentor will include: Providing 1:1 mentoring to children who require additional behavioural or emotional support. Leading small group sessions that focus on social skills, resilience, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution. Supporting children within classrooms to improve focus, engagement, and appropriate behaviour. Assisting during break times, lunchtimes, and transitions, providing structure and promoting positive interactions. Calmly and professionally de-escalating challenging behaviour. Supporting children following incidents, helping them reflect, repair relationships, and learn positive alternatives. Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral staff, and leadership to develop individual behaviour support plans. Monitoring children’s progress, maintaining accurate records, and reporting outcomes to the pastoral team. Encouraging restorative practices and helping pupils build problem-solving skills. Maintaining safeguarding standards and upholding professional boundaries at all times. The School Environment This primary school in Hemel Hempstead serves a diverse community and is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all pupils. The school recognises that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and valued. The leadership team strongly supports Behaviour Mentors and values their role in improving pupil wellbeing and behaviour. Staff are provided with guidance, supervision, and professional development opportunities. The school promotes a trauma-informed and restorative approach to behaviour management, prioritising long-term emotional development over punitive measures. Staff work collaboratively to support children in developing skills for lifelong emotional resilience and social success. Students You Will Support Children requiring Behaviour Mentor support may: Display disruptive, withdrawn, or challenging behaviour in class or social settings. Struggle with emotional regulation, anxiety, or low self-esteem. Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment difficulties. Find peer relationships, transitions, or routines challenging. Be at risk of disengagement from learning or social participation. Your role will help children develop coping strategies, emotional resilience, and confidence in themselves and their learning. Who This Role Is Suitable For This role is ideal for individuals who: Have experience working with primary-aged children in education, care, or youth support roles. Are calm, patient, and empathetic. Can manage challenging behaviour in a positive and supportive manner. Are confident in building strong, trusting relationships with young children. Are motivated to support inclusion, emotional wellbeing, and social development. Graduates in psychology, education, social sciences, or related fields are encouraged to apply, as are experienced Behaviour Mentors looking for a primary school setting. Essential Requirements Experience supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges. Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills. Ability to remain calm, professional, and consistent under pressure. Commitment to safeguarding and inclusion. Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training. Desirable Experience Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience in primary schools. Knowledge of SEMH, ADHD, or trauma-informed practice. Experience delivering small group or 1:1 interventions. Relevant qualifications in education, pastoral care, or child development. What the School Offers Competitive daily pay with long-term stability. Comprehensive induction and ongoing professional development opportunities. Supportive pastoral and leadership teams. Opportunities for career progression within primary education and pastoral roles. A positive, inclusive, and professional working environment. Why This Role Is Meaningful As a Behaviour Mentor in Hemel Hempstead, you will directly influence the lives of children who face behavioural or emotional challenges. Your consistent support, guidance, and encouragement will help children build resilience, regulate their emotions, and re-engage positively with learning. If you are passionate about making a lasting impact on primary-aged children, committed to inclusion, and motivated by pastoral care, this Behaviour Mentor role in Hemel Hempstead offers a highly rewarding and fulfilling opportunity.
