HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist

Are you a motivated, compassionate nurse who wants to make a difference?

An opportunity has arisen for a compassionate, highly motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our HIV team. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a genuine passion for caring for patients with HIV and life long conditions and an understanding of how to support newly diagnosed patients.

The HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for providing quality individualised nursing care for patients with HIV, their relatives / carers in the community and within the Trust settings.

The Nurse Specialist will work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and will provide professional nursing leadership and guidance, expert clinical advice and education for the delivery of an effective service, in line with local and national targets, Trust policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

* Working autonomously as a clinical nurse specialist to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of individual HIV patients in line with research based principles;
* Perform advanced assessments to reflect the patients' social, psychological, emotional and physical needs at initial diagnosis and before commencing or switching antiretroviral therapy;
* Perform initial assessments of unwell patients, liaising with / referring to HIV Consultants or other MDT members as appropriate;
* Demonstrate in-depth understanding of HIV co-infections and co-morbidities screening and monitoring in complex situations;
* Monitor and review plans of care with patients to meet individual needs, referring to HIV Consultants or other members of the MDT if required;
* Manage own caseload of HIV patients;
* Maintain patients' confidentiality, dignity and respect at all times;
* Carry out extended skills such as history taking, physical examinations and ordering investigations;
* Review and interpret investigations / tests results
* Discuss treatment options with patients and ensure good adherence to medications. You will act as a point of contact and advocate for disclosure of HIV status.

Person Specification


Experience

* Demonstrate knowledge of the HIV/ sexual health issues such as confidentiality, stigmatization, equality and diversity etc
* Demonstrate knowledge of current HIV / sexual health related research / evidence-based practice
* Experience in screening patients for sexually transmitted infections
* Experience in Community/District nursing


Qualifications

* Minimum of 1st Degree in Nursing
* Full UK current driving licence
* Counselling qualification
* STIF NHIVNA core competency
* STIF NHIVNA advanced competency


Skills

* Ability to autonomously assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care according to individual needs
* Ability to manage own caseload
* Ability to work with multi-disciplinary team and adapt to clinical/organisational changes
* Able to independently and competently discuss/manage difficult and sensitive issues with patients, clients and relatives
* Demonstrate good knowledge of nursing professional issues and the application of evidence based practice
* Demonstrate evidence of initiating innovations in practice


Personal Qualities

* Remain non-judgemental at all times
* Demonstrate awareness of political, gender and cultural issues related to HIV / sexual health
* Able to work out of hospital environment to engage with patients, clients, relatives, public and other organisations involved in patients care
* Ability to take initiative and demonstrate sensitivity, empathy and respect to others
