About the team or project

We are a dynamic Mechanical Operations and Planned Maintenance team consisting of eight staff: six mechanical engineers, a supervisor, and a Mechanical Maintenance Manager. The team operates under the Estates Operations banner and works closely alongside the Electrical and Building Fabric teams across the University campus estate.

The estate comprises approximately 44 buildings, including residential properties and the sports complex at Platt Lane.

The three Estates Operations teams, each with specific technical expertise and areas of responsibility, are as follows:

* Building Fabric Team: roofs, windows, joinery, locksmith services, and plumbing
* Electrical Team: lighting, low‑voltage power supplies, and emergency power generation

In addition to the above, Estates Operations also manages external contractors for certain services, including grounds maintenance.

About the role

The post holder will work alongside the Mechanical Maintenance team and will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and replacement of a wide range of mechanical plant, equipment, and systems across the University. This will be under the direction of the Maintenance Manager (Mechanical) and/or a delegated Supervisor, ensuring that University buildings remain operational to support the delivery of core business functions.

Key responsibilities

* Carrying out reactive, planned, and cyclical maintenance works as directed by the Maintenance Manager (Mechanical), Maintenance Supervisor(s), or via the maintenance management system (PLANON).
* Updating and reporting task progress through the mobile workflow system (PLANON), ensuring work tickets are fully completed and closed promptly.
* Proactively identifying and reporting defects when moving between tasks or buildings.
* Updating the Maintenance Supervisor or EFCD Helpdesk on current workload and communicating any issues that may impact task completion within agreed SLAs.
* Promoting good health and safety practices and maintaining a high standard of housekeeping, including recognising and reporting hazards or emergencies.
* Complying with the University's statutory compliance policies, adhering to relevant risk assessments, and undertaking basic checks to ensure that buildings, services, plant, and equipment are fit for purpose, reporting defects to the line manager as required.
* Using personal protective equipment, tools, power tools, access equipment, and testing equipment safely, ensuring all items are maintained and stored correctly.

This is a campus‑based role, Monday to Friday, 8.45 am–4.30 pm, reporting to the Mechanical Maintenance Manager.

About the candidate

We are looking for enthusiastic and proactive candidates with mechanical engineering experience, ideally gained within a busy, site‑based environment. Applicants should be able to demonstrate transferable skills from other mechanical sectors.

Strong communication skills and comfortable engaging with management, staff, and students on a daily basis.

* Ability to manage own workload effectively and work collaboratively to support other members of the Mechanical Maintenance team.
* Keenness to support continuous monitoring and improvement of business processes and contribute positively to a strong, team‑focused ethos.
