Project Engineer – Cabling (Power T&D)

The Opportunity
To support continued growth within our Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team, we are seeking an experienced Project Engineer – Cabling to join our Midlands operations. Working closely with the Project Manager / Project Director, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of high-value cabling projects across the region.
This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of engineered delivery solutions from concept through to commissioning and close-out, while leading site teams and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Responsibilities
* Lead and attend project reviews / project meetings
* Have an awareness of the Digital Briefcase
* Maintain accurate project records (progress, daily diaries, etc.)
* Prepare internal and external reports and liaise with stakeholders
* Help to ensure reports provide relevant information to enable informed, cost-effective decisions in line with overall strategy
* Help to ensure scope and package assignment supports the team in coordinated working
* Specify, understand, develop and implement technical information and drawings into delivery
* Understand and specify plant and equipment requirements
* Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm & keep up to date with changes in legislation
* Responsible for the safety and welfare of the general public, employees and supply chain
* Carry out Safety & Environmental Tours, promote observation and safety initiatives
* Conduct and support Accident/Incident Investigations
* Monitor effectiveness of the H&S Management System and implement improvement solutions
* Write and review RAMS and accept subcontractor RAMS
* Identify, raise and report risks and hazards
* Ensure sufficiency and competency of workforce
* Understand, control and issue safety documentation
* Complete audits
* Set people to work
* Assist the Project Manager to lead risk/opportunity reviews, present the Risk Register and recommend/implement changes
* Log and elevate any issues that cannot be resolved at delegated level of authority
* Manage subcontractors, including monitoring contractor attendance and progress, providing direct instruction and support as necessary, to meet contractual arrangements
* Ensure procurement plans are available in line with overall project plans, and material/resources/supply chain activities are delivered on schedule
* Ensure expenditure is in line with the budget and resources are utilised efficiently to ensure cost control
* Identify elements for cost recovery from others
* Incorporate and balance both operational and commercial constraints into decision making
* Analyse, appraise and implement CEs
* Own the budget
* Understand the contract and its commercial impact
* Manage commercial change
* Request plant and materials
* Help develop, implement and update resource allocation plans and raise appropriate requests
* Upskill others
* Coordinate with other project activities and internal functions
Qualifications
* Organised, innovative and creative Project Engineer with knowledge and experience of working on projects; proficient in commercial/project management communications
* Experience in implementing safe systems of work
* Experience in managing risks and change processes through solutions-based approach to problem solving
* Good interpersonal skills that enable working relationships to be developed at all levels across the business and the ability to negotiate and influence
* Communicate ideas and plans competently and with confidence
* Communicate new concepts and ideas to technical and non-technical stakeholders
* Awareness and promotion of the benefits of diversity and inclusion
* Demonstrated resilience and determination to succeed
* Proactively develop others around you including junior members of the team
* Identify and drive personal development
* Proficient on O365
Desirable qualifications
* Formal qualification in construction/engineering or equivalent industry experience
* Desire to work towards APM PFQ/PMQ
* CSCS and SMSTS or equivalent
