Job Overview
The Pre-Assessment Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, high-quality assessment of patients prior to elective surgery, ensuring they are clinically optimised and appropriately prepared for their procedure. The role involves undertaking comprehensive assessments, identifying and managing clinical risks, and coordinating necessary investigations or referrals to support patient readiness. The post holder will contribute to a range of pre-assessment services, including dated (TCI) pathways, undated (optimisation) clinics, and One-Stop services, helping to improve patient flow and reduce delays or cancellations. Working both independently and as part of the wider multidisciplinary team, the nurse will support efficient service delivery while maintaining a patient‑centred approach. This role requires good clinical judgement, effective communication, and the ability to prioritise workload in a busy environment, contributing to the department’s role in supporting elective recovery and high standards of care.
Main Duties
* Conduct pre-operative assessments for patients scheduled for elective surgery, including medical, social, and psychological evaluation.
* Identify patient risks and ensure appropriate optimisation through investigations, referrals, or liaising with GPs and other specialties.
* Deliver care within both dated (TCI) and undated (optimisation) pathways, ensuring timely preparation for surgery.
* Run and support One-Stop clinics, enabling patients to be assessed immediately after outpatient appointments.
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records using Epic EPR and Connected Care, ensuring documentation meets Trust policies and statutory requirements.
* Communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members regarding assessment findings, care plans, and pre-operative instructions.
* Escalate complex clinical issues to Band 6 or Band 7 staff and participate in decision-making for patient care.
* Contribute to maintaining service efficiency and patient flow, supporting elective recovery initiatives.
* Participate in mandatory training, departmental meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Demonstrate high technical proficiency, including accurate data entry, navigating EPR systems, and using IT to support patient care and reporting requirements.
* Support junior staff and temporary staff where required, ensuring continuity of care.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Minimum 2 years post qualification experience
* NMC Nursing Registration (Adult Nursing)
* Demonstrable communication skills – both written and verbal
Desirable Criteria
* Understanding of GIRFT principles
* Experience in Pre-Op Assessment
* Knowledge of Epic (or similar) and Trust IT systems
* Knowledge of Connected Care
