Position Overview
Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health, Level 2, 3&4 Women's Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, OX3 9DU.
This role is a part‑time (22.5 hours per week) fixed‑term (1 year) research technician position, recruiting and managing samples for NIHR portfolio studies.
Responsibilities
Handle research samples collected from patients, including the processing, storage and distribution of biological materials such as blood, urine, placentas and umbilical cords.
Use computerised databases – OpenSpecimen and REDCap – to accurately manage sample locations and anonymised clinical data.
Collaborate closely with Research Midwives, Nurses, Clinicians and the Laboratory Manager to ensure samples are processed according to established procedures and shipped appropriately.
Assist in writing study‑specific laboratory protocols and conduct regular audits in coordination with the Human Tissue Authority and the Tissue Collection Officer.
Maintain laboratory stock, perform routine lab tasks, enter analysis results into research databases and help organise sample transport to partners and coordinating centres.
Support general administrative tasks, manage departmental deliveries, uphold health and safety standards, ensure confidentiality of patient and staff data in line with the Data Protection Act, keep the workspace clean and orderly, record standard operating procedures and mandatory training and provide coverage for other technicians as needed.
Qualifications
Practical experience working in a research laboratory with hands‑on use of standard techniques while strictly following SOPs.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 tools (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and an interest in women's and reproductive health research.
