Customer Engineering Apprentice (Level 3)
2-year Fixed Term Contract – Travelling across the network
40 Hours per week
Travelling to our York Training Centre is required (accommodation available)
Start date 14 September 2026
When something isn’t right with the gas in someone’s home, you’re the person who can help make it safe. You’ll figure out what’s happening and take action to fix the problem, and keep customers reassured throughout. It’s a role that takes technical skill, but also confidence, calm thinking, good judgement, and clear communication.
As a Level 3 Customer Engineering Apprentice in gas networks, you'll blend classroom learning with hands‑on experience. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers in customers’ homes, while building your knowledge and skills at our York Training Centre.
As you develop, you’ll take on the work carried out by our Service Beyond the Meter team. From repairs & maintenance to installations in customers’ homes. You’ll also support people in more vulnerable situations, supporting those who may be older, unwell, or unsure of how to fix their boiler. It’s about taking the time to listen, explaining things clearly and making sure they feel safe in their own home.
You don’t need to have it all figured out from day one. This is a role where you’ll grow in confidence, build practical skills, and develop with a strong support network around you. And after 2 years, you’ll be ready to step into the role fully, using your skills to support customers when it matters most.
You don't need experience in this kind of role to get started. What matters is that you’re ready to learn and open to a new challenge.
Just as important as the practical side is how you deal with situations and support customers:
* Looking at the situations and working out the right next step
* Working carefully and making good decisions
* Learning by doing and getting involved in the practical side of the job
* Working through problems and finding a way forward
* Showing up ready to learn and being dependable
* Turning up ready and taking responsibility for your work
Because people will be relying on you, it’s important to be someone who stays focused and follows things through with care.
What you’ll need to get started
* Are ready to take your first steps into a career in Gas Engineering
* Are aged 18 or over by the start of the programme
* Have GCSE Maths, English, and a Science at grades 4 to 9, or equivalent
* Have a full UK manual driving licence
* Live within 45 minutes of the advertised location
* Finished all other apprenticeships by the time you start
This is a practical role, so you’ll need to be comfortable to:
* Wear the required PPE
* Work outdoors in all weather conditions
* Work with tools and equipment
* Follow our safety equipment policies
Why join NGN?
* 25 days of annual leave, plus recognised bank holidays and 2 extra half-days over the Christmas period
* Generous stakeholder pension scheme, doubling your contribution, up to 10%
* Flexible benefits and salary sacrifice options, including discounts on UK attractions, gym memberships, restaurants, experience days, plus access to a Virtual GP service
