In this rewarding Special needs teacher role, you will be responsible for creating a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment tailored to the unique needs of each student based on their care plan. Your expertise as an ASD Teacher will help develop individualised learning plans that promote engagement, through sensory based learning, whilst providing students with a comprehensive adapted curriculum focused on ensuring personalised learning goals are met.
The School
The successful Special Needs Teacher applicant would be joining a long-standing SEN school Lewisham for children with ASD and complex needs. This SEN school offers provision for pupils from 4-19 years.
There is a focus on child-centred learning, and staff are trained in specialist communication methods such makaton, PECS and communication books, as well as working alongside a focus on growing independence as they move through the school.
Special Needs Teacher Key Responsibilities
10. Develop and implement personalised educational programs based on a curriculum that centres around students needs, such as connecting and responding, life skills and independence.
11. Work with individualised care plans to maximise student potential, development and success, focusing on a modified national curriculum that suits the need of the student.
12. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including therapists and educational psychologists
13. Foster a positive and supportive classroom atmosphere.
14. Monitor and assess student progress, adapting approaches as the Special Needs Teacher in the classroom.
15. Engage with parents and caregivers to support student development at home and in school.
16. Work with and lead a support team within the classroom
Special Needs Teacher Qualifications
17. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
18. Strong knowledge of ASD teaching practices
19. Strong knowledge of phonics - many students have speech and communication issues
20. Experience working in a primary education setting is preferred.
21. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
22. DBS or willingness to obtain one
23. Right to work in the UK
