Role
We are currently looking for a Senior Health and Safety Advisor to support in the operational delivery and implementation of the health and safety arrangements. The role provides competent, practical advice, supports compliance with health and safety legislation, and works closely with curriculum areas, estates and support services to promote a positive health and safety culture.
The postholder plays a key role in risk assessment, incident management, inspections, training and monitoring, escalating strategic, high-risk or complex matters to the Head of Health and Safety.
Accountabilities
* Ensuring the College meets its statutory health and safety obligations through effective operational implementation.
* Provide practical, competent health and safety advice to managers, staff and departments, referring complex issues as appropriate.
* Support the development, review and monitoring of risk assessments, safe systems of work and control measures, particularly in higher‑risk curriculum areas.
* Complete DSE Assessments and implement control measures.
* Review and accept Visits and Trips in accordance with College policies.
* Lead and support accident, incident and near‑miss investigations, ensuring accurate reporting, follow‑up actions and trend analysis.
* Carry out health and safety inspections, audits and compliance checks, reporting findings and actions to the Head of Health and Safety.
* Assist with preparing reports, data and documentation for the Health and Safety Committee and internal monitoring.
* Promote a positive health and safety culture and support continuous improvement across the College.
* To undertake additional duties that may be required commensurate with the level of responsibility of the post.
These duties may be amended from time to time by the line manager in consultation with the post holder.
Requirements:
* NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, or equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification.
* Practical working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and guidance.
* Experience of supporting health and safety compliance.
* Experience of completing, reviewing and supporting risk assessments and safe systems of work.
* Experience of accident, incident and near‑miss investigation, including reporting and follow‑up actions.
* Experience of conducting health and safety inspections or audits.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to influence and challenge constructively.
* Ability to prioritise workload, manage deadlines and work independently.
* Good written skills, including report writing and record keeping.
* Competent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office and electronic reporting systems.
