Job Description:
Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do — the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative, you’ll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our operative community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.
About the role (External)
Operatives can specialize in various disciplines; for this role, you’ll become a specialist in Off track work: maintaining, inspecting, and repairing land alongside the track to ensure safety and efficiency. This includes vegetation management, drainage, and ancillary structures.
Our operatives work outdoors in all conditions, year-round, day or night. You’ll be involved in demanding manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety focus, rule respect, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
The team depends on you. You’re the first to arrive and the last to leave, ensuring equipment and vehicle readiness, and driving the team between sites. Daily, you’ll support equipment maintenance and provide lookout duties for safety.
Our maintenance teams rely heavily on operatives. You don’t need rail experience but must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:
* Teamworking: collaborating closely to deliver safe, efficient work
* Communication: effective and safe communication skills
* Proactive planning: punctuality, readiness, and anticipating team needs
* Working under pressure: remaining calm outdoors near high-speed trains
* Following rules and instructions: understanding, respecting, and questioning unsafe situations
* Willingness to learn: continuously developing relevant skills and staying updated
* Experience as an arborist
It matters that this is the right role for you
Additional information:
* Shifts: includes days, nights, and weekends with a changing pattern
* Outdoor work: comfortable working in various weather conditions
* Safe working: subject to drug, alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams
* Driving: valid category B license to operate Network Rail vehicles
* Commute: within 60 minutes of the location
You matter to us
Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We provide comprehensive training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you for a rewarding rail career. Today’s technicians are tomorrow’s team leaders, with clear career progression.
As a Network Rail employee, you’ll enjoy benefits such as:
* Privileged staff travel: 75% leisure discount, including family
* Rail and underground season ticket subsidy: up to 75%
* Healthcare, cycle-to-work scheme, discounts on healthcare, childcare, online shopping
* Work-life balance: 35-hour week, hybrid and flexible working, family support
* Paid volunteering leave: 5 days
* Paid reserve leave for Armed Forces: 2 weeks
* In Wales and Western regions, join PROUD, our recognition scheme for outstanding colleagues
