Consultant in Gynaecological Oncology

Applications are invited for a Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist.

This is a replacement position funded by the NHS.

The postholder will join an existing team of 16 NHS gynaecologists/ Gynae-oncologists and 5 University of Oxford Clinical Academics. The Gynaecological Oncology service is based in the Cancer Hospital at the Churchill site of the Oxford University Hospitals, Level 0 Surgery and Diagnostics Building, Old Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 7LJ

The service is the Regional Service for the Thames Valley, covering a population of 2.3 million. The successful candidate will lead a team of subspecialty-trained Gynaecological Oncologists and will benefit from access to state-of-the art theatre facilities on site. The department is part of a strong multidisciplinary team who together provide this regional service.


Main duties of the job

Clinical

The postholder's duties will be primarily at theChurchill Hospitalbut it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations. The post will expected to undertake Gynae-oncology clinics, regular theatre lists and weekly MDT. Depending on the interests of the successful candidate they may also undertake some colposcopy/ hysteroscopy. We are particulary interested in candidates who have an ambition to drive improvement in the whole clinical pathway in gynae-oncology.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

There is a strong translational research programme in Gynaecological Oncology in Oxford, with a main focus on ovarian cancer within an established Ovarian Cancer Cell laboratory at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine. The research includes work on understanding the initiation of ovarian cancer, its genomic evolution and metastasis and the mechanistic basis of chemotherapy resistance with particular emphasis on minimal residual disease.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC registration
* Relevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
* Higher medical or research degree


Training

* RCOG Sub-Specialist training in Gynaecological Oncology or equivalent
* Expertise in outpatient hysteroscopy


Work Experience

* Extensive experience in Minimal Access surgery in Gynaecological Oncology
* Evidence of experience of complex gynaecological oncology surgery including sentinel nodes sampling
* Clinical leadership experience
* Evidence of experience of use of HIPEC in ovarian cancer treatment
* Evidence of project leadership within Gynae-oncology that delivered improved patient care
* Evidence of authorship of clinical guidelines at a local or national level.
* Formal Training in clinical management


communication

* Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
* Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training for O&G trainees
* Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development
* Evidence of ability to teach practical skills eg laparoscopy
* Postgraduate qualification in medical education
* Evidence of undertaking serious incident investigations
