Research Associate - Department of Microbes, Infection and Microbiomes - 106517 - Grade 6 at University of Birmingham

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Contract: Fixed term up to November 2027. Full-time salary range £33,002 to £35,608 with potential progression to £39,906. Part Time (30 hours per week).


Role Details

Background: Applications are invited for a Research Associate to support a flagship NIHR funded Biomedical Research Centre project developing metagenomic sequencing for infectious disease diagnostics. The post holder will support two post-doctoral scientists in developing protocols and pipelines to enable rapid shotgun sequencing on real clinical samples to identify the causative agents of infections. The role is based in the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham.


Main Duties

* Perform processing of clinical samples for sequencing
* Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
* Participate in research team meetings
* Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
* Provide guidance to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
* Participate in and contribute to public engagement events
* Analyze research data as directed
* Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
* Address problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
* Promote equality and values diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture


Person Specification (Qualifications & Skills)

* A BSc (minimum) or MSc in a laboratory-based molecular biology discipline
* Experience of performing DNA and RNA extractions
* Experience of working to standardised SOPs in a molecular biology laboratory
* Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
* Ability to access and organise resources successfully
* Strong organisation and time-management skills
* Cooperative nature and strong teamwork skills, with the ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to public engagement activities
* Strong IT skills
* Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics and commitment to treating everyone fairly
