Consultant in Obstetrics with Interest in Maternal Medicine (Diabetes)

Applications are invited to apply for the above post in the Maternity Department at the Oxford University HospitalsNHS Foundation Trust. The department is seeking a capable and motivated doctor who enjoys working in both aDistrict General and tertiary referral service and wishes to effect change and improve care for patients within thisservice.The successful candidate will join the maternity service which provides general obstetric services to the localpopulation - 7500 women per year are cared for within the Trust. There are also tertiary referral services in fetaland maternal medicine, supported by a Level 3 neonatal unit.We anticipate that the successful candidate will have in Fetomaternal Medicine and will continue to maintain thisexpertise after appointment.This post is intended to be mainly based at the Horton Hospital in Banbury but there is also a Deliverysuite/Caesarean Section session at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford. In order to maintain appropriatecompetency, there will also be a necessity to rotate through ANC sessions at the John Radcliffe approximately 1in 4. The provision of high-risk clinics at the Horton are required in alignment with the OUH strategy of carecloser to home. On call will be Maternity only at the John Radcliffe Hospital.


Main duties of the job

The post-holder's duties will be split between the Horton General, Banbury and the John Radcliffe Hospital,Oxford.ClinicalOxford University Hospitals NHS Trust provides services across four sites (John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford,Horton Hospital Banbury, Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital and the Churchill Hospital, Oxford). Obstetric inpatientand outpatient services are based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. In addition, outpatient obstetric clinics areundertaken at the Horton Hospital in Banbury. The successful applicant may be required to work across bothsites. The post holder will be expected to undertake high risk antenatal clinics at the Horton Hospital.The post-holder will be expected to undertake sessions providing acute general intrapartum care and obstetriccare supported by at least 2 other obstetricians in training as part of this post.The post holder will undertake obstetric on-call duties of no more frequent than 1:9, currently 1:16 with internalcover (equivalent to 1:12.8 in the worked year). The out of hours on call attracts a supplement paid at Band A.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification

* Primary medical qualification - MBBS / MBChB or Equivalent
* MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration
* Full GMC registration
* Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC) at the time of starting in post
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC
* Higher medical degree


Clinical experience and effectiveness

* Broad-based experience in general obstetrics and antenatal care
* Competence in managing high-risk pregnancy, especially diabetes.
* Experience in multidisciplinary care and joint diabetes antenatal clinics
* Recent intrapartum care experience, including emergency obstetrics
* Experience providing out-of-hours/on-call obstetric care
* Familiarity with UK guidelines (NICE, RCOG) on diabetes in pregnancy
* Maternal Medicine ATSM or SITM or equivalent.
* Subspeciality Training in Fetomaternal Medicine


Teaching and training and research

* Experience of supervising junior staff
* Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training for O&G trainees
* Postgraduate qualification in medical education
* Leader in formal multidisciplinary team training
* First author peer reviewed publications


Organisational and management experience

* Effective administrative and time management skills.
* Evidence of leadership of service improvement project leadership within an acute service
* Evidence of having implemented change within the clinical setting
* Training in clinical management
* guidelines at a local o


Professional - extra skills or achievements

* Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
* Full UK driving license of equivalent (Appropriate insurance for business use)

* Good spoken and written English
* Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and midwives
