Associate Lecturer - Archaeology in Roman Slavery
Do you have a passion for Roman archaeology and teaching? Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to teach in 2026.
We are looking to recruit a part-time Associate Lecturer to deliver lectures, seminars, site visits, and associated assessment supervision and marking for a single, 30-credit module. The module is level 7 and scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6-9 pm, during the Spring term (January - March 2026).
The weekly topics for the module include:
1. Approaching slavery in the Roman World
2. Becoming Enslaved
3. The Material Culture of Slavery 1: Confinement and Control
4. The Material Culture of Slavery 2: Hidden Lives
5. The Enslaved Body
6. Slaving Landscapes
7. Comparative approaches
8. Slavery, Violence, and Roman Imperialism
9. Manumission and Freedmen
10. Visualising Slavery
Candidates should have a strong knowledge of historiographical and theoretical debates in the archaeology of enslavement, Roman archaeology, and should have completed or be near completion of a PhD. Experience teaching diverse postgraduate students is also essential.
Your responsibilities include delivering engaging teaching, supervising coursework, and marking essays and presentations. Additional requirements include:
* A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field or near completion
* Experience teaching undergraduate students
* A developing research record in the field
* Understanding of various teaching methods and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and good administrative skills
