Offer description

As part of our recruitment process for this bailiff vacancy, we aim to support candidates by sharing interview questions in advance. If you are selected for interview, you will receive the questions relating to the assessed behaviours when we notify you that you are required to book your interview slot. This will help you prepare and reflect on relevant examples from your experience. During the interview, the panel will ask follow‑up questions to explore your responses in more depth and gain further insight into your skills and experience. Please note that strengths‑based questions will not be shared in advance.

Assessed Behaviours

* Making Effective Decisions
* Managing a Quality Service
* Communicating & Influencing

We asked some bailiffs what they love about their job, and here are their responses:

* Helping people and guiding them in the right direction while remaining professional.
* Dealing with a variety of situations and being prepared to handle difficult ones.
* Working as part of a supportive team.
* Resolving concerns that people have been worrying about for some time.
* Delivering documents across a designated area, to companies, individuals and at home.

What a Bailiff Does

As a bailiff you will visit people in their homes and businesses, calmly explain the reason for your visit, and outline available options to help resolve matters. You must be able to assess circumstances quickly, adapt plans, and demonstrate empathy while maintaining a focus on the core duties of the role. You will manage a workload that may change at short notice and will be expected to travel widely within your designated area.

You will be able to use your own car during the probation period, after which a lease car will be provided (UK driving licence required). Fuel allowances, full PPE, and safety training will be supplied. You must be comfortable using IT and trained on court case management systems.

Working Arrangements

* Hybrid working is offered where business needs allow. A minimum of 60% of the working time must be spent in an office.
* Standard full‑time hours are 37 hours per week.
* Flexible working is available on a case‑by‑case basis, including part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing patterns.

Benefits

* Annual leave: 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after five years’ service.
* Pension: choice of Civil Service pension schemes.
* Training: extensive staff development opportunities.
* Employee networks and family‑friendly policies.
* Paid paternity, adoption and maternity leave.
* Free annual sight tests for screen‑based work.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

The Civil Service is committed to attracting, retaining and investing in talent wherever it is found. We are a Disability Confident employer and run employee‑run networks to support minority groups, people with disabilities, caring responsibilities, women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Candidates who are members of the armed forces may be eligible for a guaranteed interview scheme.

Immigration & Right to Work

Applicants must have or be able to obtain the legal right to live and work in the UK. This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas; sponsorship is only considered for those who held a Skilled Worker visa before 22 July 2025.

Application Process

To demonstrate your suitability, please prepare a Statement of Suitability that clearly links experience to the essential criteria: communication skills, commitment to customer service, ability to handle difficult conversations, and technology proficiency.
