Overview

Shape the future of energy infrastructure with Balfour Beatty. We’re looking for a driven and experienced Project Engineer – Substations to join our Power T&D team, working on the flagship Apollo Project. In this role you will work alongside the Project Manager/Project Director, delivering substation works and ensuring the successful delivery of the Apollo Project through planning, design, delivery, monitoring, commissioning and hand‑over/close out.


Responsibilities

* Governance & Reporting
o Conduct regular project reviews and maintain the Digital Briefcase.
o Ensure accurate project documentation (progress, diaries, etc.).
o Prepare and present reports to internal and external stakeholders.
* Decision Making & Technical Oversight
o Interpret and challenge technical inputs and designs.
o Guide teams to deliver feasible and effective solutions.
o Ensure reporting supports informed, cost‑effective decisions.
* Health, Safety & Environment
o Champion Zero Harm and stay current with legislation.
o Lead safety tours, incident investigations and RAMS reviews.
o Maintain a live H&S plan and ensure workforce competency.
* Resource & Team Development
o Empower teams to manage work safely and effectively.
o Mentor and upskill team members.
o Manage resource plans and coordinate internal functions.
* Leadership & Line Management
o Set team goals and development plans.
o Build high‑performing teams through training and motivation.
* Risk & Opportunity Management
o Own the Risk Register and lead reviews.
o Escalate unresolved issues appropriately.
* Procurement & Supply Chain
o Manage subcontractors and ensure timely resource delivery.
o Align procurement plans with project schedules.
* Quality Assurance
o Drive certification readiness and KPI achievement.
o Lead audits and improvement initiatives.
* Planning & Controls
o Develop and maintain resource‑loaded schedules.
o Implement productivity controls and milestone tracking.
* Commercial & Contract Management
o Control budget and resource efficiency.
o Manage commercial changes and reporting routines.
o Understand and deliver contractual obligations.
* Digital Delivery
o Promote consistent digital data use and standards.
o Ensure team training and adoption of digital tools.


Qualifications

* Experience working on a variety of project types.
* Demonstrated track record of project delivery.
* In‑depth understanding of standard contract forms.
* Proficient in commercial/project management communications.
* Experience implementing safe systems of work.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels.
* Ability to communicate new concepts to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Effective team‑management skills – empower, influence, inspire.
* Knowledge of performance evaluation techniques and key metrics.
* Solution‑based problem‑solving approach.
* Vision‑aligned mindset – able to see and communicate business vision.
* Commitment to diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity.
* Current driving licence.
* Formal qualification in project management (preferred).
* Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSCS, SMSTS).
