Quantity Surveyor - Refurb & Conservation | Central London (a stones throw from Charing X)
For anyone who's realised “existing conditions” usually means brace yourself.
Hands‑on QS role with full commercial responsibility - valuations, variations, budgets, final accounts. No hiding behind spreadsheets… although there will still be plenty of those.
Projects are refurbishment / conservation led - listed buildings, mansion blocks (S20), high‑spec commercial. £150k-£2m on paper, usually a bit more once the building has its say.
Expect:
* Tight access
* Live sites
* Drawings that are more of a suggestion
* And uncovering things no one priced for (but everyone's now very interested in)
Clients include CBRE, BNP, Cushman - so it's well run, but not immune to the usual fun.
They're after an intermediate‑senior QS who's commercially sharp but also knows how things actually get built. Trade background helps — someone who won't panic at a scaffold ladder and can count bricks without turning it into a desktop exercise.
Refurb/conservation experience useful, but not essential.
What tends not to land well:
* CVs that read like short‑term site diaries
* Looking for an “easy” number on straightforward jobs (these aren't)
* Titles that have moved faster than experience
* Or expectations that haven't quite caught up with time spent on site
30‑year contractor, ~£13m turnover, steady pipeline. In‑house trades, specialist subs, minimal layers - you'll be left to get on with it (in a good way).
Probably suits someone who's bored of pricing jobs perfectly that were never going to go that way anyway.
