Hampshire County Council Passionate about managing our precious inland waterways for public access, navigation and conservation? We are looking for a dynamic self-starter to join our small team managing the Basingstoke Canal. About the Basingstoke Canal • A 32 mile, tranquil, tree lined navigable waterway through Hampshire and Surrey • Designated SSSI, with 29 locks and numerous historic structures, the 230-year old canal requires constant attention • A valued recreational space for boating, walking, cycling and wildlife The Waterway Ranger plays a key part in the safe, effective and high quality management of the canal. You will help deliver a varied programme of operational, environmental and public facing duties, including: Key Responsibilities • Practical estate and canal maintenance • Managing water levels and operating locks • Routine surveys and asset inspections • Updating work records, H&S documentation and asset information • Working alongside volunteers and engaging with the public as the face of the organisation • Participating in an out of hours duty rota (approximately 1 in 5 weeks; occasionally 1 in 3), with additional allowances paid Base: Basingstoke Canal Centre, Mytchett (near Camberley) Working environment: Significant time outdoors, year round, in all weather conditions We’re looking for someone with: Essential • A degree or HND or substantial practical experience in: o Countryside/environmental management o Estate management o Civil engineering or similar field • Confident swimming ability • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team • Good IT skills, including Word and Excel • Physical capability to undertake regular outdoor manual tasks Desirable • Knowledge of inland waterways • Experience with GIS or CAMS
