Role Overview
12 month role supporting the delivery of Microbiology services. The post holder will have the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills, knowledge and attitudes related to clinical and laboratory practice in microbiology and virology.
Skills and Competencies
* broad understanding of the diagnosis and management of infectious disease from a clinical and laboratory perspective
* diagnostic skills required in the practice of clinical microbiology and virology
* knowledge of specialist areas such as infection control
* communication skills required for the practice of clinical microbiology and virology and the teaching skills necessary for effective practice
* knowledge of health protection aspects of clinical microbiology and virology
* experience in research and development and critical assessment of published work
* acquisition of life‑long habits of reading, literature searches, consultation with colleagues, attendance at scientific meetings, and presentation of scientific work essential for continuing professional development (CPD)
* experience of the practice of clinical governance and audit (specialist and multidisciplinary) through evaluation of practice against the standards of evidence‑based medicine which underpin medical microbiology and virology practice
Main Duties
* Clinical & Laboratory duties: work with consultants and other laboratory staff, authorization and interpretation of laboratory results on specimens, utilising Standard Operating Procedures under the supervision of consultant microbiologists and virologists
* Ward‑based clinical liaison
* Participation in on‑call duties during this post
Teaching and Training Opportunities
* Department runs a regular weekly local teaching programme facilitated by a consultant microbiologist
* Regular ID teaching programme organized by trainees in Infectious Diseases and facilitated by a consultant in Infectious Diseases
* Other educational opportunities: regional training days, HIS trainee education programme (Infection Prevention themed), ad‑hoc departmental training opportunities and trust‑organized Grand Rounds
* Encouraged to attend these opportunities wherever possible and contribute to teaching both within and outside the laboratory, including postgraduate doctors in training, medical students, nurses, allied health professionals and laboratory staff
