Post-Doctoral Fellow (Neglected Tropical Diseases)- The Kirby Institute

This Job is based in Australia

Employment Type: Full Time; 35 hours per week

Duration: 12-month fixed term contract with possible extension

Remuneration: Academic Level A or B ($113K - $150 K) (based on experience) + 17% Super and Leave loading

Location: Kensington, NSW

Why Your Role Matters

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will conduct laboratory-based research to support projects focused on detection techniques for multiple neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and other infectious diseases. The role contributes to studies assessing NTD burden in endemic countries and evaluating the impact of disease control strategies, including participation in epidemiological studies and sample collection for laboratory analysis.

Reporting to senior academic staff within the research team, the Fellow will perform key laboratory tasks such as serological analysis, DNA extraction, and PCR-based diagnostics, while also supporting data management, statistical analysis, and dissemination of findings.

At Level A, the position focuses on contributing to collaborative research projects, managing laboratory operations, maintaining datasets, and assisting with student supervision.

At Level B, the Fellow will additionally develop an independent research portfolio, lead project design, contribute to competitive funding applications, and mentor students and junior researchers.

Skills & Experience

At (Level A)

* A PhD in biomedical sciences, epidemiology, public health, biostatistics or a similar relevant field.
* Demonstrated experience in molecular and cell biology with a focus on infectious diseases, including in the development and conduct of qPCR, ELISAs, multi-bead serological assays, and microscopy
* Excellent skills in data and specimen management and quantitative analysis with a statistical analysis package (e.g., SAS, Stata).
* Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
* Demonstrated experience writing and publishing peer-reviewed journal articles and/or reports for non-expert stakeholders.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills with highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with staff and students from diverse backgrounds.
* Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills
* Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
* Knowledge of infectious disease control programmes, as relevant to low- and middle-income countries; practical experience desirable.
At (Level B)
* A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
* Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
* Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
