Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist/Echocardiographer

The closing date is 19 October 2025

We are seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist to join our expanding Cardiopulmonary department.

The successful candidate should be BSE accredited (or equivalent) and will be expected to work independently, performing and reporting transthoracic echocardiograms to a high standard.

We may also consider ETP/STP students who are actively working towards their BSE accreditation. In such cases, the role would be offered under Annex 21, with appropriate support provided. Upon successful completion of BSE accreditation, the candidate would enter a preceptorship period to further develop their skills and experience to the required level for independent practice.


Main duties of the job

To work as an independentpractitioner within the Cardiology team.To be BSE accredited; to be able toperform and report own echocardiograms and to amend and validate juniorphysiologists echocardiogram reports.Topractise with a high level of skill and autonomy a range of other cardiacphysiology procedures and be expected to perform them if required.To provide technical expertise,supervision, support and training to technical and medical staff.To produce technically satisfactory reportsin accordance with national and departmental standards.To communicate complex instructionsand clinical information effectively to all categories of patients, ensuringco-operation and compliance to obtain accurate technical and clinical data.To analyse clinical information andclinical conditions during procedures, whereby judgement is required todetermine the appropriate course of action.To visual and verbal risk-assessevery patient prior to carrying out any clinical investigations.To initiate Basic Life Support andImmediate Life Support when required.To ensure safe use of specialist /expensive equipment used by self and others.To report all untoward events oruncertainties to the Head of Department.To work at all times in a safe andresponsible manner.To plan and prioritise personalworkloads according to daily staffing levels.To advise junior medical staff onthe availability, selection and appropriateness of test procedures.This post has no budgetaryresponsibility.

Job responsibilities

To provide clinical interpretation and hightechnical expertise on Cardiac Ultrasound scans performed by self and juniormembers of staff, in accordance with the British Society of Echocardiographystandards, guidelines and departmental protocols and policies. Actingappropriately in the event of significant adverse findings, alerting physicianswhen immediate medical attention is required.

To take responsibility to perform cardiopulmonaryresuscitation and defibrillation on patients in an emergency situation.

Awareness of adverse clinical conditions/clinical eventsoccuring during the investigations and ensuring swift and appropriate action istaken to minimise life threatening or significant medical events.

To be familiar with current developments in thefield of Cardiology.

To liaise with other departments and Companiesregarding maintenance and repairs to existing equipment within the department.

To liaise in conjunction with the Head ofDepartment, regarding evaluation of new clinical equipment.

May be opportunityTo be involved in the Stress Echoand TOE services and receive appropriate training if needed.

To participate in formulatingdepartmental policies, procedures and protocols in conjunction with the Head ofDepartment. In particular the development of the complex echo service.

Undertake new initiatives to improvethe patient clinical service. On the direction of the Head of Department takethe lead role for service developments in agreed areas.

To work with the Head of departmentin setting, maintaining, monitoring and auditing quality and technicalstandards for within the department.

To provide high technical expertise in teaching,training and supervising all grades of staff within the department and the trust.

To continue Professional Developmentand be responsible for keeping own skills updated, including BSEre-accreditation and Intermediate Life Support.

To undergo such training as isdeemed necessary to maintain efficient discharge of duties.

To undertake all Trust mandatorytraining on an annual basis.

To undertake clerical duties andmaintain records concerning all aspects of investigations carried out withinthe department.

To be conversant with computeriseddatabases.

To produce technicalreports/comments.

To compile daily statistical recordsof patient activity.

To assist with the input of clinicalactivity onto Oasis and the departmental databases

Special Requirements:

There will be a need to travel to other hospitalswithin the Trust to carry out duties.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Degree in Clinical physiology or equivalent
* British Society of Echocardiography accreditation (BSE)
* Registration for AHCS/HCPC


Experience

* Significant experience as a Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist
* Highly specialised and advanced knowledge of Echocardiography
* Experience of providing training & assessment
* Supervision of staff
* Teaching and development of staff
* MDT and clinical meetings experience
