Director of Artificial Intelligence Grade: L7 Role Purpose & Context Reporting to the Senior Director of Emerging Business and Technology, the Director of Artificial Intelligence is accountable for helping continuously define and evolve the enterprise architecture vision, strategy, and execution for Liberty Mutual’s Artificial Intelligence ecosystem. This role is central to building Liberty Mutual’s AI backbone, spanning data engineering, machine learning platforms, MLOps, Generative AI, and agentic systems. The Director ensures AI capabilities are scalable, secure, responsible, and aligned with enterprise strategy and regulatory expectations. This is a key role in supporting the growth of Data, ML & AI technical talent within the company including the line management of senior technical staff in Liberty IT. Key Responsibilities Enterprise AI & Data Architecture Leadership Continuously evolve enterprise architecture strategy for AI, data and ML Define target-state architectures across data platforms, ML systems, GenAI, and agentic AI. Ensure solutions are modular, cloud-first, secure-by-design, and vendor-aware. Data & ML Platform Strategy Lead architectural direction across ingestion, governance, analytics, ML development, and operations. Establish MLOps standards for model lifecycle management. Partner with Engineering and Data Science to ensure platforms are production-grade. Generative AI & Agentic Systems Define architecture for GenAI platforms, including LLMs, RAG, and orchestration frameworks. Lead evolution toward agentic AI systems with appropriate controls. Enable scalable, repeatable GenAI use cases embedded into daily workflows. Responsible AI, Risk & Governance Partner with Risk, Legal, and Security to ensure compliant AI architectures. Support explainability, auditability, privacy, bias mitigation, and model governance. Champion Responsible AI by design. Stakeholder Leadership, Influence and Delivery Act as senior advisor to executives and technology leaders. Influence enterprise technology and investment decisions. Position Liberty IT as a leader in AI architecture. Form and lead teams to deliver agreed technical visions and strategies People Leadership, Talent Development and Culture Form and lead teams to deliver solutions. Grow and develop senior architecture and AI technical talent across Liberty IT. Build internal AI architecture communities of practice. Mentor and develop future leaders. Essential Criteria 8 years in senior architecture or technical leadership roles. Deep experience in data platforms, ML systems, and AI. Strong understanding of cloud-native infrastructure and GenAI. Proven ability to align technology strategy with business outcomes. Excellent leadership and communication skills. Experience in building strong stakeholder and vendor relationships Proven experience in consulting with senior (C-level) stakeholders Demonstrable record of strong employee engagement with proven ability to facilitate organisation / team development (through mentoring, training recommendations, etc.) Excellent communication, analytical and interpersonal skills An ability to lead process improvement to generate efficiencies, effectiveness and cost savings across complex environments / involving large groups of stakeholders.
