Summer Support and Media Communications Assistant

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.

OSU will conduct a review of the National Sex Offender Public website prior to hire.

Note: All job offers are contingent upon Human Resources final approval.

Position Summary: This recruitment will fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Summer Support and Media Communications Assistant for the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) at Oregon State University (OSU). The role supports summer academic operations, community programming, and communications. It facilitates courses, field experiences, and student events while creating student‑centric digital media and promotional content that highlights experiential learning at the Oregon Coast and contributes to the creation of Hatfield tour and outreach materials.

Position Duties


Summer Operations Support (50%)

The employee will help support summer academic operations, student programming, and community engagement at HMSC.


Course & Field Support

* Assist with summer courses, including: driving, loading, and refueling university‑owned 6‑ or 12‑passenger vans for field trips; assisting instructors in the field; setting up labs and classrooms; managing organization, storage, and inventory of shared lab and field equipment and storage areas supporting teaching.
* Support development and implementation of Guin Library–MACO–Innovation Lab LabShare program to improve access, tracking, and visibility of shared field and lab equipment.
* Navigate and respond to evolving course and faculty needs by troubleshooting technical and logistical challenges and implementing solutions with professionalism and flexibility, in coordination with a supervisor.


Community Events & Outreach

* Execute and support summer HMSC community event programming as directed by supervisors.
* Assist with and/or co‑facilitate HMSC events such as orientations, meetings, workshops, and other community programs from setup to breakdown.
* Support weekly research seminar logistics, including monitoring Zoom for remote participants.
* Promote, attend, or participate in HMSC campus programming, including weekly research seminars, the Markham Symposium, and professional development sessions.
* Monitor the HMSC student Discord channel and share information as appropriate with supervisors.
* Participate in community outreach activities, including providing or assisting with campus tours.
* Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
* Collaborate with Hatfield Housing, RAs, HMSC Operations, faculty, staff, and other partners to support student needs, course operations, and community activities or other shared goals as requested.


Communications, Project Management, and Collaboration (50%)

The employee will support storytelling, digital communications, project coordination, and collaborative work across HMSC and MACO.


Communications & Media

* Collaborate and consult with supervisors to identify content goals and priorities, while contributing creative ideas and approaches to tell the story.
* Review and apply insights from past HMSC/MACO social media projects to improve new promotional materials.
* Document experiential learning through photos, videos, interviews, and written content, exercising judgment to remain respectful and non‑intrusive.
* Develop plans, prioritize, and manage timelines to collect and create content, meet deadlines, and maintain organized, labeled media files.
* Collect content via photography, video, and interviews using a smartphone and digital camera.
* Synthesize collected content into print and digital communications materials, including social media images and captions, short videos, flyers, webpages, etc.
* Lead and implement a weekly “Summer Hatfield Student Experience” social media series in collaboration with partners.
* Adhere to OSU branding guidelines and digital accessibility regulations.
* Mentor as a reliable, knowledgeable peer resource by sharing information about program and events.
* Connect with students, faculty, visitors, and the public to promote HMSC academic initiatives and direct individuals to appropriate resources.
* Develop and update Hatfield tour and outreach materials to support admissions efforts.


Project Management & Professional Responsibilities

* Plan, initiate, manage, complete and evaluate assigned projects demonstrating organization, accountability and attention to detail.
* Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet deadlines and support day‑to‑day operational needs.
* Attend and actively engage in regular check‑in meetings with supervisors, providing updates, feedback, and progress reports on assignments.
* Communicate clearly and in an organized manner to foster an inclusive and respectful team environment.
* Complete all required training and orientation assignments in a timely manner.
* Maintain organized and accessible files and data in Box and other platforms.
* Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, consistent follow‑through, timely completion of responsibilities, and asking questions for clarity.
* Build and maintain strong, positive, professional working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, peers, and students.
* Demonstrate adaptability by navigating changing priorities and working effectively in diverse environments.
* Identify and facilitate connections across the HMSC community.
* Contribute to team‑based projects and initiatives, supporting shared goals and collaboration.
* Demonstrate curiosity and initiative by seeking opportunities for learning, growth, and skill development.
* Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
* Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
* Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
o High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program.
o Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
o Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term.
o Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
o Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term.


Additional Required Qualifications

* Must be a current OSU student or degree partnership student with OSU at the time of hire and through duration of the position.
* Have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher.
* Maintain good academic and conduct standing with OSU.
* Proficiency in Canva, Meta Business Suite, Instagram, Facebook, X, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Zoom, or other similar programs and a willingness to learn new software as needed.
* Experience in graphic design, such as creating flyers, social media posts and captions, etc.
* Photography, videography, video editing, and interviewing skills.
* Experience editing images and videos, including short reel creation.
* Demonstrate strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
* Ability to work independently, prioritize projects, and proactively seek guidance from supervisor as needed.
* Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive 6‑ and 12‑passenger (or willingness to learn).


Preferred (Special) Qualifications

* Familiarity with Hatfield and MACO’s social media and web presence.
* Experiences with Adobe Creative Suite, Capcut or other relevant software products essential for digital media creation.
* Experience or interest in creating compelling social media and/or other digital and print marketing content.
* Familiarity with the Hatfield Marine Science Center and experience supporting or participating in experiential, field‑based learning.
* Foundational knowledge of or interest in marine and coastal science, environments, or related topics.
* Ability to remain in the position for the duration of Summer Term through Fall intersession.
* Previous experience living and/or working in an educational residential community.
* Preference will be given to students in an undergraduate academic program at OSU who have at least 1 year remaining in their degree pathway.


Working Conditions / Work Schedule

* May work 20‑40 hours per week in summer.
* Preferred employment dates are June 8 to September 21, 2026.
* Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, but may include some early mornings, evenings, and possibly weekends.
* Required to work during Summer Orientation week June 15 – June 28, 2026 (Juneteenth Holiday exception).
* Range: $15.05/Hour – $16.00/Hour.
* Furnished residence hall‑style room, shared with other student workers.
* Occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds.
* Regular work outdoors in varying weather conditions (windy, rainy, cold, hot).
* Walking and traversing up to several miles a day on unmaintained paths, rocks, and sand.
* Communicating with members of the OSU community and the public.
* Driving a university‑owned 6‑ to 12‑passenger van, sometimes on unmaintained roads and small parking lots.
