We are seeking an experienced Depot Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our client depot within a non-hazardous waste and recycling environment.
This is a hands-on role responsible for managing staff, maintaining operational efficiency, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and supporting the smooth running of both yard and production activities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in managing equipment, stock, documentation, and staff performance while maintaining high safety and operational standards.
This role requires someone with experience in waste management or recycling operations, with a strong understanding of handling, processing, storage and movement of non-hazardous waste materials in line with environmental and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations Management
- Manage daily depot operations including yard activities, pallets, skips and material movements.
- Oversee the handling, segregation and storage of non-hazardous waste and recyclable materials in accordance with company procedures and environmental regulations.
- Ensure materials entering and leaving site meet required quality standards.
- Oversee baler operations including maintenance, repairs, servicing and wire management.
- Manage forklifts (FLT) including servicing, inspections and battery maintenance.
- Monitor diesel levels and arrange fuel orders when required.
- Organise equipment inspections including weighbridge, scales and machinery.
- Manage stock control and monitor deliveries.
- Book loads in and out and ensure accurate documentation.
- Order tools, parts and equipment required for production and site operations.
- Obtain quotes and arrange repairs for depot equipment and facilities.
- Manage contractors working on site.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with site health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure operations comply with environmental and waste management regulations relating to non-hazardous waste handling and processing.
- Conduct regular yard walk-arounds including fire safety checks and weekly documentation.
- Organise and manage fire safety systems including:
* Fire drills and evacuations
* Fire alarm servicing
* Emergency lighting inspections
* Fire extinguisher servicing
- Carry out risk assessments and implement control measures.
- Ensure compliance with PUWER inspections.
- Manage asbestos documentation and compliance where required.
- Investigate and manage incidents and accidents, completing all relevant reports and documentation.
Staff Management & Responsibilities
- Manage depot staff and agency workers.
- Oversee staff rotas, holidays and daily workforce planning.
- Approve agency hours and timesheets.
- Conduct recruitment, interviews and new employee inductions.
- Carry out disciplinary procedures and internal investigations when required.
- Conduct return-to-work meetings and performance reviews.
- Deliver staff training and ensure all documentation is completed.
- Provide daily operational briefings to staff.
Documentation & Administration
- Maintain accurate operational documentation and records.
- Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for production and warehouse activities.
- Manage risk assessments and training records including FLT certification.
- Manage petty cash and maintain records of receipts and invoices.
- Record and monitor site meter readings and update reporting spreadsheets.
- Maintain and update all site documentation including:
* Staff sign-in sheets
* FLT sign-out sheets
* Visitor sign-in sheets
*Site rules
- Maintain organised filing systems for invoices, receipts and compliance documentation.
- Print and manage daily operational schedules and documentation.
General Site Management
- Conduct daily site checks and secure the depot at the end of the day.
- Monitor site consumables including cleaning products, paper supplies and printer materials.
- Ensure welfare facilities are stocked and maintained.
- Manage incoming phone enquiries and operational communications.
Skills & Experience
* Previous experience working within a waste management, recycling or environmental services environment
* Experience handling or managing non-hazardous waste materials
* Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations
* Experience managing operations within a warehouse, depot or industrial site
* Experience managing teams and agency staff
* Strong organisational and administrative skills
* Experience managing operational documentation and compliance processes
* Ability to manage multiple operational priorities in a fast-paced environment
