Job Title: Solution Designer/Architect (Operational Technology, Telemetry, SCADA, Gas Control)

Location: Horley/Portsmouth

Reports To: Product Group Manager

Salary Range: £75k - £80k depending on experience


Purpose of the Role:

The Solution Designer is a key part of the product group management and project delivery team, and will work with Architecture and Business Solutions teams to provide end to end solution designs, at both a high and a detailed level, for projects and programmes, taking account of business requirements, while ensuring solutions are aligned to in the technical & corporate strategies and are consistent with enterprise architectural roadmaps.

The solution design role flows from idea generation and technical delivery, supporting projects through the full lifecycle. The Solution Designer will use their knowledge of the application estate and technical options available to design the best value, most fit for purpose solution to meet the business’ needs for the project, while working within the confines of the strategic architectural roadmap.


Key Responsibilities:


Stakeholder Management:

* Work closely with Business Enterprise Architecture and Business Solutions to grasp a full in-depth understanding of the business requirements and strategy for their workstream.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business goals and support delivery outcomes.
* Communicate progress regularly to peers, Senior Management and the Business.
* Be the go-to person/SME for queries around solutions design and application capability within their workstream.
* Work with the technical Centres of Excellence to ensure that reusable components for integration, network connectivity and productivity are used in end-to-end solution design as appropriate.
* Work with IT Security to ensure that security is built into solutions by design.


Alignment to Corporate Strategy & Dependencies:

* Collaborate with the Architecture Team to ensure designs are aligned to overall strategic architectural direction.
* Ensure that designs are consistent with Information Security standards and processes.
* Ensure that the designs support the relevant application roadmaps and enterprise architecture plans.
* Ensure the viability of the end-to-end solution, taking into account other programmes of work.


Design:

* Develop end to end technical solutions to meet agreed requirements as part of a change, project or a programme.
* Ensure that the designs meet the functional and non-functional requirements as agreed with the business and IT Enterprise Architecture and IT Network Architect
* Articulate these designs into High Level Designs (HLD’s) and, once approved to proceed to work with vendors to create Detailed Designs (DDs).
* Articulate appropriate quality measures as part of the HLDs and DDs.
* Present the design at Technical Design Authority and Architectural Review Board for approval as required.


Governance & Control

* Responsible for representing technical change through the corporate governance process (TDA and ARB) for approval before commencement of build.
* Ensure that any design risks, dependencies, scope and scale are fully understood by decision making bodies.


Change Implementation:

* Provide relevant input into project risk and issue registers based on the design.
* Provide technical consultancy for project and programme managers as part of the design and development of new solutions and act as a single point of contact for technical aspects for the Project.
* Support the testing and support teams in the production of their relevant artefacts and processes
* Complete Technical Assessment and Impact analysis as a result of new requirements or scope change.
* Ensure that the HLDs and DDs are updated (and re-approved) if there are any changes in requirements or scope.
* Contribute to the coordination of third parties, such as vendors, outsourced partners, or parent companies, to ensure the delivery of solutions across domains and technologies remains aligned.
* Ownership of the integration of third party designs into designs when applicable.
* Develop and maintain a level of technical expertise, knowledge of current best practice and industry trends to act as a technical point of reference for their workstream or specialist area.
* Keep up to date with Strategic Change and Utility Sector trends.


Education:

* Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field or equivalent work experience.
* PRINCE 2 Foundation (preferred)
* ITIL (preferred)
* Other relevant technical certifications could include Cisco or Juniper accreditation (CCNA or CCNP equivalents), Microsoft Certifications (Azure / O365 / Windows)


Experience:

* Solutions Design, Architecture or Systems Analysis experience – including working at an ISP.
* Experience in producing High Level and/or Detailed Designs for projects and programmes.
* Experience of requirements management, process mapping and context diagrams.
* Ability to challenge

* Builds and maintains effective working relationships with peers, senior colleagues and Business Stakeholders
* Has a hands-on approach, is delivery focused with an emphasis on practical results.
* Able to rationalise potential issues and provide solutions/options and recommendations.

* Good working knowledge of project lifecycle, techniques and methodologies.
* Working knowledge of benefits management and business changes


Desired Experience:

* Cloud computing experience (delivery and/or migration).
* Experience of Lean ways of working including Kanban.
* Experience/Knowledge of Utilities Sector.
* Required Key behaviours and style indicators
* Ability to interpret technical detail into business language.
* Ability to respond effectively to rapid change
* Ability to work with incomplete requirement specifications
* Good interpersonal and communication skills.
* Collaborative team player.
* Ability to lead and take control when required to do so
* Assertive and driven
* Good at building rapport and influencing at all levels
