If you are looking for a challenging post in critical care as a step into higher training or you seek to develop your critical care skills, then this job is for you!

This post in Critical Care Medicine offers the post holder an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic critical care unit where you will gain experience in the management of a wide range of medical pathologies and be able to develop key managerial and governance skills. The hospital is part of the Northeast London Critical Care Network and is supported by the tertiary centres at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s hospitals.

The post holder will be working alongside experienced ICM colleagues and will be fully supported do develop the hard and soft skills to become an effective critical care fellow. The unit is very active in research and audit with several presentations at international and national conferences and participation will be encouraged. The post holder will also be expected to take a lead on developing and implementing a QIP during their time and will contribute to the unit meetings and journal club presentations.

While this is a 12-month post, there may be the opportunity to extend the contract to either continue in critical care or to work in anaesthetics. Career development, including Portfolio pathway/CESR, will be actively supported.

Main duties of the job

·Provide high-quality clinical care to critically ill patients

·Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement treatment plans for patients.

·Ensure the highest standards of communication with patients, their families and the MDT, including maintaining an accurate written record.

·Participate in teaching and training activities for medical students, junior medical staff, and other healthcare professionals.

·Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance processes.

·Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.

·Participate in the on-call rota for the Intensive Care Unit

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

1. GMC Registration
2. MINIMUM 12 months ICM PLUS 12 months anaesthetics or a further 12 months ICM or EM.
3. ALS

Desirable criteria

4. Completion of stage 1 ICM/anaesthetics training MRCP/FRCA (primary) /FFICM/MRCEM (primary)
5. APLS/EPLS/ ATLS
6. EDIC/EDAIC

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria

7. Competence in airway management, including management of the difficult airway
8. Competence in critical care procedures: Initiation of advanced organ support, central vascular access, chest drain insertion, bronchoscopy, patient transportation, and ability to interpret key diagnostic tests.
9. Ultrasound skills for vascular access and shock assessment

Desirable criteria

10. FICE/Level 1 ultrasound sign-off
11. Transfer training
12. Experience of percutaneous tracheostomy

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria

13. Experience in teaching and Simulation
14. Commitment to lifelong learning

Desirable criteria

15. Instructor on Life Support course(s)- ALS/ATLS/APLS
16. Basic teaching skills e.g. Teaching the teacher to Teach course/ SIM facilitator course

Governance

Essential criteria

17. Understanding the principals of governance and risk management

Desirable criteria

18. Experience of audit or quality improvement
