An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and values-driven Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager (Band 8b) to join the Pathology Directorate at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust on a 12-month fixed-term basis to provide maternity leave cover.

This is a senior operational leadership role within a clinically led service model, responsible for the day-to-day delivery of safe, effective and high-quality Blood Sciences diagnostic services at Derriford Hospital. The postholder will work closely with the Service Clinical Lead and Directorate Professional Lead, and report to the Directorate Manager.

This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a large, complex diagnostic service at scale and would suit an experienced laboratory or diagnostics leader, or a senior operational manager seeking a high-impact interim or step-up leadership opportunity.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ' Priority ' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Available as a fixed term contract

The postholder will be accountable for the operational leadership of Blood Sciences services, including workforce, performance, quality, governance and delegated budgets.

Key responsibilities include:

Leading the day-to-day operational delivery of Blood Sciences services, ensuring safe, timely and resilient diagnostic provision

Managing service performance, turnaround times, capacity and operational risk

Providing visible leadership to a large multidisciplinary workforce, supporting engagement, wellbeing and development

Ensuring compliance with accreditation, regulatory and governance requirements, including UKAS and specialist frameworks

Managing delegated budgets and resources, delivering value for money and agreed efficiency plans

Leading and supporting service improvement, productivity and transformation initiatives

Working in close partnership with clinical, professional and operational colleagues across Pathology and the wider Trust

The Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager plays a key senior leadership role in the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality diagnostic services within the Blood Sciences Laboratory.

Reporting to the Directorate Manager, the postholder works in close partnership with the Service Clinical Lead and the Directorate Professional Lead as part of a clinically led leadership team. The role is accountable for the day-to-day operational management, performance, workforce, quality and financial delivery of Blood Sciences services, ensuring alignment with Trust priorities, regulatory requirements and agreed Directorate plans.

The postholder will lead a large, multi-specialty service operating on a 24/7 basis, providing visible and credible leadership to the laboratory workforce. They will ensure that clinical priorities are translated into effective, resilient and sustainable operational delivery, while fostering a positive, inclusive culture aligned to Trust values.

Direct experience of Blood Sciences is desirable but not essential. Structured clinical and professional leadership support will be in place, and applicants from a range of relevant senior operational or diagnostics backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
