NorPower Job Description – Linesman Class 1

Job Title: Linesman Class 1
Reporting To: Foreman / Charge Hand
Reporting In From: Trainee / Linesman Class 2

Health and Safety Statement

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HASWA 1974), NorPower, as your employer, has a duty to protect your health, safety, and welfare, as well as that of other people who may be affected by our business. NorPower must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this.

As an employee, you have a duty under HASWA 1974 to take care of your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions. You must work with NorPower and your co-workers to assist everyone in meeting their legal requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Work as part of a squad, following instruction from the site Foreman, to carry out all works associated with the construction/refurbishment of overhead lines, including:

1. Assembly and erection of steel towers and wood poles.

2. Stringing, tensioning, sagging, jointing, clamping of all types of overhead conductors and making of stay wires.

3. Installation of all types of insulators and overhead line equipment.

Additional Duties:

4. Assist in supervising, training, and coaching new and inexperienced staff members, remaining alert to their actions and making them aware of hazards.

5. Comply with NorPower’s policies, taking responsibility for your own actions to assist the company in meeting its aims and objectives.

6. Participate in risk assessments and carry out assigned tasks in a safe manner in accordance with instructions, complying with safety & environmental rules, regulations, and codes of practice.

7. Ensure the safe use and storage of all equipment and tools provided by the company in accordance with training/authorisation.

Key Competencies

Essential:

8. Experience in all tasks associated with the construction/refurbishment of overhead lines – both wood pole and steel tower.

9. Competent in working at height using permanent attachment techniques.

10. Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.

11. Ability to work as part of a team.

12. Sound awareness of the consequences of not following work practices/method statements.

Desirable:

13. Experience of carrying out risk assessments.

14. Experience in the safe operation and use of plant/machinery where applicable.

15. Experience in completing site records.

16. Hold relevant Client authorisations.

17. Hold an appropriate certificate in H&S training (e.g., IOSH Working Safely).

18. First Aid Certificate.

19. Training in: Manual handling, COSHH, Vehicle/machine banksman, Behavioural Safety, Rescue from structures, MEWP, Telehandler, Hagglund.

20. Full driving license.
