Operations Director – Civil Engineering, Rail
Colman Rail is seeking an experienced and dynamic Operations Director to lead and coordinate the operational delivery of our rail civil engineering projects. This pivotal role requires a leader who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and is committed to delivering excellence across multiple sites.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan, manage, and oversee day‑to‑day operations across multiple rail civils projects (drainage, structures, embankments, station works).
* Ensure on‑time, on‑budget delivery to the highest quality and safety standards.
* Lead resource planning and allocation (labour, plant, materials) to maximise efficiency.
* Ensure full compliance with Network Rail standards (including NR/L2/OHS/003, NR/L2/CIV/003) and Sentinel requirements.
Health, Safety, Quality & Environment
* Champion a proactive safety‑first culture across all operations.
* Conduct site inspections, audits, and safety briefings; ensure adherence to CDM 2015, RISQS, and company procedures.
* Drive continuous improvement and embed lessons learned across the business.
Leadership & People Management
* Line manage operational staff, supporting their development, performance, and wellbeing.
* Lead recruitment, induction, and competency programmes.
* Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high‑performing team culture.
Commercial & Client Management
* Partner with the commercial team on forecasting, variations, and project reporting.
* Build and maintain strong client relationships; represent the business at progress meetings.
* Provide operational insight and resource planning support for bids and tenders.
Strategic Contribution
* Support business planning, operational strategy, and company growth initiatives.
* Monitor KPIs and deliver regular performance updates to Directors.
* Identify and implement efficiency improvements across planning, delivery, and reporting.
What We’re Looking For
* Strong knowledge of Network Rail standards and rail safety management systems.
* Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
* Sound commercial awareness and resource planning capability.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and project management tools.
Full UK driving licence.
* SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely.
* Working knowledge of NR/L2/OHS/003, CDM 2015, and ISO9001 frameworks.
