Applicationsare invited for the post of Critical Care andAnaesthesia Trust Grade (Specialty Doctor) for a 12 months Fixed Term Contractstarting 11th August 2025.
SouthTyneside and Sunderland FT Anaesthetic Department seeks applications for anenthusiastic and friendly team player for a Trust grade doctor post at Specialty Doctor grade level or equivalent. The successful candidate willparticipate in the provision of critical care service primarily based on theSouth Tyneside hospital site with some elective anaesthesia duties atSunderland Royal Hospital.
Thepost holder may need to provide medical care for patients receiving level 3care being transferred between Trust sites and to tertiary centres.
Main duties of the job
Thispost will allow the successful candidate to further develop their clinicalskills and experience in a supportive and dynamic department with a trackrecord for excellence in training. As a trust doctor you will be entitled tostudy leave and the post attracts 1 SPA per week. Clinical and educationalsupervision will be provided, with opportunities for development in leadershipand management, quality improvement and medical education.
Thepost is based over both acute sites within the Trust. The out of hours resident duties of this postwill primarily be based at the 6 bed Intensive Care Unit at South TynesideHospital on a 1:9 rota. Some activitywill be delivered in the 16 bed Intensive Care Unit in Sunderland. Elective sessions in anaesthesia will beprimarily on the Sunderland Royal site.
Youwill work in a team of trainees from the Northern School of Anaesthesia &ICM, Trust doctors and consultant intensivists. The post is ideally suited tothose that have completed ST3 training and are looking to further their skillsand experience. It is envisaged you will gain a portfolio of competences andexperiences that will enhance your future career.
Applicantsmust be fully registered with the General Medical Council with a licence topractice. Applications from clinicians unable to work full-time will also beconsidered.

Job responsibilities

To provide critical care resident care forpatients in critical care. This will encompass:
* Workingas part of our multi-disciplinary Critical Care team.
* Assessmentand management of the critically ill patient.
* Liaisonwith medical/surgical specialties, ensuring seamless and safe patient care.
* Communicatingwith patients and families.
Participation in the Critical Care on callrotas for evening, night shift and weekend cover, predominately at SouthTyneside Hospital.
To provide anaesthesia for planned andunplanned theatre cases under direct, local or distant supervision asappropriate if staffing levels allow.This will be based across the Trust but primarily at Sunderland Royal Hospital.This will encompass:
* Preoperativeassessment on the ward or Day of Surgery Assessment Unit (DOSA).
* Preoperativeplanning in consultation with supervising Consultant Anaesthetist.
* Provisionof anaesthesia (local, regional with/without sedation, general as appropriate).
* Postoperativecare as clinically appropriate.
To provide assistance as required in Maternityin an anaesthetic / critical care capacity.
Person Specification
Non-Clinical Experience
* Is able to demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
* Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
* Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives. Understands the importance of audit and QIP (quality improvement projects) to the practice of intensive care medicine and anaesthesia.
* Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice.
* Evidence of teaching experience and/or training in teaching.
* Evidence of involvement in management commensurate with experience.
* Demonstrates an understanding of NHS management and resources.
* Demonstrates information technology skills.
* Evidence of clinical governance activity such as presentation at a clinical governance meeting, involvement with incident reporting, dealing with complaints.
* Demonstrates an understanding of research methodology.
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements and involvement in a formal research project.
* Evidence of relevant academic publications.
* Evidence of a portfolio of audit projects including where the audit loop has been closed and there is evidence of learning of the principles of change management.
Special Requirements
* Flexibility to respond to changing service needs.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from the GMC.
* Eligible to work in the UK.
* Primary FRCA or equivalent.
* Current employment in a UK Core Anaesthetics / ACCS Anaesthetics Training Programme and have completion of a stage 1 certificate (2021 curriculum) by the post start date OR current employment in a UK Anaesthetic Higher Specialty training programme (2021 curriculum) at ST3,ST4 or ST5 level OR Completed Equivalence certificate for Stage 1 (2021 RCoA curriculum)$ OR Successful completion of a UK ACCS or core anaesthetics training programme.
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as assessed by the General Medical Council.
* Applicants must meet professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice).
* Have at least 24 months (Full time equivalent) experience in dedicated Anaesthetics and/or Intensive Care Medicine posts (not including Foundation modules) by time of the start date for the vacancy (of which at least 6 months should be in intensive care medicine).
* ALS, ATLS, APLS.
* Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD.
* Postgraduate qualifications achieved in other specialties.
Clinical Experience
* Must be able to provide complete details of their employment history.
* Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances.
* Present level of achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of their period of training.
* Sound clinical knowledge judgement with the ability to apply in the workplace.
* Experience managing patients with severe acute medical disease.
* Demonstrates awareness of the management of acute medical conditions, including emergencies such as GI bleeding, severe asthma, heart failure and so on.
* Documented competence through continuous work-based assessments and other portfolio evidence.
* Able to undertake the following with distant supervision (evidence may be requested): Central venous and arterial cannulation, induction of anaesthesia for the critically ill patient with cardiorespiratory instability or raised intracranial pressure, transfer of the ventilated patient.
* Ability to undertake indirectly supervised lists and emergency care of ASA 1 and 2 patients for minor and intermediate surgical procedures.
* Experience in a complementary specialty.
* Additional clinical competence to that expected by the training programme.
