The National Lottery funded ‘A Wilder Walkmill’ project aims to improve Walkmill Community Woodlands, near Moresby, Whitehaven for people and wildlife and encourage greater use of this fabulous community resource. Walkmill Community Woodland is a vital and much-loved open space and is important because of its significant natural and industrial heritage. ‘A Wilder Walkmill’ aims to improve access for all, create new and improved habitats to support nature recovery, increase volunteering opportunities, events and activities for the local community, and provide education sessions and forest schools.

Job Purpose and Summary

To carry out practical ‘hands on’ conservation works at Walkmill Community Woodland and other areas throughout Cumbria. To gain relevant qualifications in countryside, environmental and land-based management studies – The Countryside Worker L2 Qualification - in partnership with a training provider (confirmation of college yet to be finalised).

As part of the scheme, you will be expected to attend college classes for a week at a time at set times of the year or one day every fortnight. You will also get the opportunity to work with other rivers trusts in Cumbria as well as the National Trust, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and the Lake District National Park, among others.

Location: Keswick and West Cumbria
Hours: 35 hours per week (1 day home/office working on college work)
Salary: Apprenticeship wage £7.55/hour for the first 12 months followed by national minimum wage for the remaining 6 months of the apprenticeship
Contract Length: 18 months apprenticeship scheme from September 2025 to February 2027
