Boundary Layer and Orographic Processes Senior Scientist – Met Office

This role is full time (37 hours per week) with a potential hybrid working arrangement (part of the week in the office and part from home). The advertised location will be your contractual place of work. We may consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Our opportunity is within the Boundary Layer and Orographic Processes (BLOG) group in the Atmospheric Processes and Parametrizations (APP) team. You will work on developing and evaluating models that represent lower-atmosphere processes to improve weather forecasts and climate predictions.


Responsibilities

* Evaluate current and prototype regional forecast model configurations by comparing to observations.
* Investigate how surface and topography modulate the local thermodynamic state and the formation/maintenance of low-visibility conditions.
* Develop better representations of key atmospheric processes to improve forecasts.
* Present work to key stakeholders and contribute to project reports and scientific papers.


Qualifications and Skills

* Essential Criteria: Knowledge and experience equivalent to a University degree (2:1 or above) in physical sciences with strong mathematical content; a proven track record of high-quality research in a mathematical or physically based science; equivalent to PhD level plus relevant postdoctoral research experience.
* Expert by nature: Experience leading design, development and use of complex scientific software to analyse and interpret data and handle large datasets.
* We keep evolving: Ability to learn new IT skills (Python, Fortran, Linux) and deploy them in a quality‑assured environment, including running and developing models on a supercomputer platform.
* We’re a force for good: Excellent oral and written communication skills with a strong publication record and ability to communicate complex scientific information to diverse audiences.
* We live and breathe it: Ability to work independently on challenging problems and deliver well‑documented, high‑quality scientific output.
* We’re better together: Evidence of mentoring junior staff and effective teamwork to deliver high-quality scientific output in a timely manner.
* We live and breathe it: Track record applying scientific analysis to understand the world and deliver useful outputs to stakeholders.
